Review: Destined to be a classic, I saw this movie on Nov 21, 1999. Dark and moody sets and beautiful cinematography make this a triumphant return of the Depp/Burton team. Kudos from a thrilled viewer.

Review: The movie started off on the wrong foot with Ichabod saying 1799 was the dawn of a new millenium. He was off by 201 years. things improve with the arrival in sleepy hollow, giving a strong sense of foreboding; in typical Burton style the entire stay in sleepy hollow was shot at night, before dawn or under late afternoon clouds. This already was foreshadowing the sun would come out once the curse was lifted. upon arrival ichabod gets a smooch from underage Christina Ricci, daughter of his host. I felt the movie was picking up now as you see guards posted in town against the horseman. and the matter of fact way the town leaders tell him its a headless horseman gave me a shiver. Depp uses optics and autopsy equipment that only tim burton could have concieved, leading him nowhere. upon his first encounter with the horseman he realizes the spirit world is at work. it..it..it was a horseman he says!this got a good laugh out of the movie goers. the carnage continues Crane narrows down the victims to a conspiracy at work, confusing the real world with the demonic assasin doing somebodies bidding but who? Van Tassel ends up framed for it but dies. oh you forgot the two litle girls in the scene where the Horseman gets killed. they where there for a reason. Burton did a good job too with the young orphan who loses his father, he develops into a man very rapidly and you have to like his guts going up against a witch and a horseman at 15 odd years old. the windmill scene was a weak moment, reminding me too much of Batman, but the film climaxes nicely at the tree of death. the head is restored, ending the bargain with Satan, so the witch should have lost her head and had that taken to hell, and her headless body cursed to live with the sister she murdered....instead of going straight to hell, when you sell your soul isnt it the deal that you live out your life then go to hell not get killed right off? I guess hte horseman was christopher walken but I didnt bother to read the ads. I think the horseman was cool in every scene, especially the battle with Riccis soon to be dead boyfriend. notice he didnt lose his head, that was a nice touch. Burton used foreshadowing perfectly and the use of fog and lightning was great. my favorite scene was when the dig up the horsemans body just as he recomposes and explodes on his demon mare out of the tree of death. awesome!! go horseman. his use of weapons was very good and the leather outfit, though not 1779 hessian was more 1996 Batman but he looked so cool it was worth a burtonism. the humor should have been left out, and the bugging out of eyes anbt toungue of the dead witch cave scene nearly ruined the movie. murdered by decrapitation yet she lives, so the eyes should be gone and rotted away not poking out like my faovite martian,beetlejuice etc etc ad nauseum. if you take out the references to new century. millenium and the flying eyeballs I would rate this a perfect 10 fairy tale I give it a nine and a caning to Tim Burton for 15 seconds of total crap in a otherwise perfect movie.

Review: Very few movies I would ever give a 5 to, so 4 is really good in my book. The story and acting was great. Depp added a unique humor to his character that had the whole audience responding. Lots of positive energy in the theatre becasue of it. There was also a large dose of tension and "edge of your seat action. I thought the special effects were terrific. I'm not crazy about the "witchcraft" stuff but it was intregal to the plot. It was better than I expected and recently that makes it a good movie to me. I've, to often of late, left the theatre telling myself...." Self, that movie wasn't as good as I hoped, or Self that movie sucked"! Anyway I also loved the sets,and the cinematgraphy was stunning! I want to see that villiage! But I guess it doesn't exist? BOO HOO.

Review: I just got back from seeing Sleepy Hollow. Burton scores again. I'm surprised that the movie has been getting bad reviews. Seems the main complaint is that it doesn't stick to the Washington Irving short story. To be honest, I like Burton's version better. Johnny Depp proves once again, that he is one of the best actors of his generation. Christina Ricci is a goth boi's wet dream, and Ray Park (who was the Horseman on the ground) gave a great performance for someone sans noggin and lines. Chris Walken (Horseman with head) is one of the scariest looking guys on the planet! The sets and costumes are pure eye candy - so gorgeous and ethereal. My brother called it "Nightmare Before Christmas with people." It has that kind of feeling to it. The script and plot flow along nicely, and while Ichabod is an invesitgator instead of a school teacher, like in the book, Depp captures the spirit of Ichabod quite nicely. I wouldn't recommend the movie for the faint of heart. Lots of beheadings and gore, but noone does blood quite as artistically or prettily as Burton.

Review: Everything about this movie was beatiful. I was amazed at the photography--all the attention to even the tinest detail. This is a movie I'd love to see over and over. Producer Scott Rudin called Johnny Depp as much a set piece in the film as any of the sets themself. I now understand what he meant--his look, the way he seemed to "fit" this role. Unbelievable. The headless horseman was fantastic--also really loved the runaway carriage scenes--incredible. I've seen it twice and it will be difficult to not go back tomorrow!

Review: One of the the most brilliant and entertaining films from director Tim Burton, "Sleepy Hollow" will no doubt be considered one of the best movies of 1999. Adapted from the classic "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving, Burton transforms his tale into a Gothic murder mystery where Inspector Ichabod Crane of the the New York Police is sent to investigate a series of murders in the small town of Sleepy Hollow in upstate New York; what follows is a dark jewel of a horror film which slowly unfolds like the well-oiled clockwork of some macabre mechanical device in which Ichabod Crane is forced to accept the existence of the supernatural, yet must follow logic and reason if he is to solve the mystery and bring an end to the horror which threatens the people of Sleepy Hollow. A truly brilliant film with excellent writing, beautiful sets, costumes, lighting, and cinematography, and a cast of gifted and talented actors whose performances are worthy of an Oscar nomination or two, especially those of Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci and Miranda Richardson. Tim Burton does a superb job of directing, and proves once again that he is one of the best directors in Hollywood. "Sleepy Hollow" will no doubt be considered a classic film in the years to come, and if it does not get at least one Oscar nomination, heads will roll...

Review: Good movie! Tim Burton's surrealism is noticed in every scene. Dark, creepy and gothic moods go hand and hand with the film. It was hilarious as well as ingenious. Especially the parts when the headless horsemen was coming out of the "Tree of the dead" and when he was confronted on the crossbridge by one of the men who was reloading just is time to get thrown out of the way and meet his doom. Indeed, this was a good horror flick...and I do mean horror. This movie reminds me not to pay strict attention to these corny critics who sort of downplayed the film. Meanwhile, I totally disagree, this was a good film and I will be seeing this again with the rest of the family during the Thanksgiving holdays!

Review: I viewed "Sleepy Hollow" on Thursday, November 11, 1999 at the Paramount studio in Hollywood. It is pretty certain that this is the version that will be released to the public.I found this to be an excellent film (and no, I do not work for Paramount, Tim Burton, or anyone connected with the film). It is very much in the style of the old fashioned horror film, with great performances from a very good cast. The plot is constructed as a mystery (Ichabod Crane is attempting to solve a series of murders), with all the usual twists and turns. It also features a solid romance within the plot, and a lot of humor (which helps set off the grimmer elements).Some will probably dislike the way the plot is wrapped up in the film's closing scenes. To me, it is absolutely in the style of the genre. If you are familiar with the "I've-called-you-here-to-explain-what-happened" convention in films, you will be fine with this ending.I also like the fact that the film doesn't cheat on what is promised. The Headless Horseman is GREAT! They had three performers and a ton of effects, and it's all there on the screen.If you can look at this as the "real" story that was the source of the legend, you may not be as bothered by the departures from Washington Irving's tale. Review: Absolutely amazing!!!! I'm am still trying to catch my breath! I was lucky enough to receive a ticket for an advanced screening last night the 15th in Salt Lake City Utah. I hope you are not too familiar with the screenplay, because it is so much fun going into the film not fully knowing what to expect. It was difficult for me to refrain from reading the entire script, but I'm glad I did. From the second the credits began to roll, I was completely hypnotized. The images were so powerful and beautiful! They were simple perfect. The film was everything I had hoped it would be and more! A perfect blend of outrageous horror, humor, and visual bliss!!! I'll be back for a second look this friday!

Review: This is not a movie review because the movie is not out yet, this is a script review from The Art of Sleepy Hollow and all I can say about this movie is This is going to be the best horror movie EVER!!! It's not one of those dumb slash em' up teenagers running from big scary guy with hook for a hand movies that has been cloned a million times. This is a movie that has a good head on it's shoulder's, in a manner of speaking. The script is witty and smart and the diologe is going to be delivered perfectly,( you can tell this from the trailer) It was well thought out and has somthing for everyone! Okay lets say you can't pull yourself away from those nasty gore fests with stabing and blood and all that. This film has dicapatations galore, people turning into snakey things, organs flying out everywhere and the nastiest scene has somthing to do with a Reverend Styeenwick and Lady Van Tassle, I'll just say EWWWWW, it's pretty goreless but still prety gross. Okay now ! those for all those hopeless romantics out there ( you knew I'd get to you sometime), this movie has a great love story between Katrina and Ichabod,great first kiss, but sorry to those who like gross humor (Somthing About Mary) that was happily left out. I love the way Tim burton is so loyal to his actors Johny Depp has been in a number of his films ( ED WOOD, Edward sciorhands) Jeffery Jone-reverand Steenwyck has been in ED WOOD,Edward scisorhands, Beetle juice. Lisa Marie has been in at least Ed Wood (maybe other but thats all I can remeber). It's really cool. thats my review SEE THIS MOVIE I COMMAND YOU! Review: I was one of the lucky ones who got to see SLEEPY HOLLOW at a preview screening. The movie was absolutely AMAZING, nay UNBELIEVABLE, nay a work of art. I was just sitting there in to amazment and total disbelief at how wonderful the entire movie was. I'm not going to give any details about the movie sos not to riun the magickal experiance for the rest of you, all I will say is you will laugh, Johnny Depp is increadible, Christina Ricci is absolute wonderful, and the special effects are mesmirizing. Kudos to Tim, Johnny, Christina and the rest of the cast for a job increadibly done.

Review: Well I dont understand why but there is one thing that makes this new movie seem so creepy. It has that "gothic" thing about it that makes you not want to look over your shoulder, only one other movie has made me do that, "Mary Shelly's Frankenstein", I just know after this movie is over, I wont get much sleep that night. Review: Although deviating from Irving's novella, this current incarnation of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow appears to have retained the essence of the story and has Tim Burton's trademark "horror" batmanesque darkness pervading it. The story's Dutch colonial feel has taken on a more English atmosphere (no doubt due it being filmed in England rather than upstate New York), which is similar enough for a smooth transition. This is, as Burton put it, a truly original American ghost story that has a certain new world American quality that allows a glimpse into America's past that isn't Native American or early Spanish or French. The setting is unique and interesting as is the new Ichabod Crane. Anyone with such a staunch belief in science would have been viewed with suspicion and this is conveyed in the story as well. The familiar yarn of a cop on the trail of killer feels somehow new with the setting and fairytale like atmosphere surrounding Sleepy Hollow. The previews f! or the film are a testament to the excellent job the film's marketing department has done and it remains to be seen whether or not the film is as exciting and compelling as the trailers would have us believe. I might defy the power of Ebert's thumb and watch this film anyway just to get a glimpse of the combined stop-motion and cgi effects and to see the setting of early America, a rarity in films.

Review: Among the trashy, sappy, and sugar-coated drivel that always seems to emerge from hollywood, finally there is a new reason to praise the gods of otherworldly films. (Hitchcock,Bradbury, Burton) I would like togive congratulations to Burton for pioneering this soon-to-be classic. It takes an ingenious, open-minded person to stray off the beaten path of the usual bubblegum, teen slasher, and melodramatic drivel that are so abundant. Anyone with a brain (no pun intended) should muster up a little courage and venture into Sleepy Hollow.

Johnny Depp, as Ichabod Crane, is brilliant...again. He retains the 'fraidy cat Ichabod image from the original book, but that's where the similarity ends. The infamous headless horseman takes on an almost "Terminator" sort of presence. There is more "choppin" going on in this movie than in Martha Stewart's kitchen. This is a beautifully scripted, filmed and scored piece of cinema. The trailers and TV commercials do not begin to show the intensity that this movie possesses. Tim Burton & Danny Elfmann can paint a macabre portrait like no other duo. The best thing Warner Bros can do is get the word out that this is "loosely" based on Washington Irving's work. I was expecting something a little more subdued. Man, was I shocked. Great, great screenplay. I walked out of the theatre wishing I had it on video NOW!
