Original Description:
In the summer of 1979, a group of Detroit friends with $375,000 raised from local investors headed for a cabin outside of Morristown, Tennessee to make a film about five college students possessed by an ancient `Book of the Dead.' The filmmakers' goal was to create `The Ultimate Experience in Grueling Terror,' a movie so relentless that it would stand forever as a landmark in modern horror history. When it was released in 1982, it was immediately recognized worldwide as one of the most ferociously original films ever made. Twenty years later, this is THE EVIL DEAD like you've never seen or heard it before.
Comments:
Out of the entire Evil Dead trilogy, this seems to be the one that Sam Raimi has put the most effort into restoring--or at least the one with the most versions. (Or not; there are six North American versions of Army of Darkness now.) Let's count how many versions I've seen so far:

“fragile clear-pastic case” version “skeleton chick” version “Book of the Dead” version “girl being pulled into the grave” version with green letters
1st 2nd 3rd 4th
  1. The “fragile clear-pastic case” version
  2. The “skeleton chick” version
  3. The “Book of the Dead” version (with a case molded to look like the Book of the Dead)
  4. The “girl being pulled into the grave” version with green lettering
I used to think that Sam Raimi was really great, but after the way he puts out so many versions of his movies, I'm starting to think otherwise...
Anyways, the version you see on this page is the “girl being pulled into the grave” version with green letters. Not only is it at least the fourth DVD version, but it's also the first one that wasn't $30-40; I paid $15 for this one. And it seems to have all the special features--at least the important ones anyways: Widescreen and DTS. (Why wasn't the VHS re-release availible in widescreen?) Note that “This is the Ultimate Edition of the legendary film...” is discretely printed on the back of the case.
Oh, yeah, I'm supposed to talk about the movie: Like the unoffical subtitle indicates, this movie is frightening and gruesome. Really gruesome. I speak from experience when I say that you shouldn't try to eat a meal while watching the Evil Dead.
There's also a bit of really dark humor that might make you laugh, if your stomache's not in a knot. The funniest part though, is listening to the commentary with Bruce Campbell as he makes fun of himself.
I'm not a big fan of slasher movies, but I got into this one because I'm a big fan of Evild Dead II and Army of Darkness (which I didn't discover until after I found out that that's where Duke Nukem got a lot of his one-liners). If you like slasher movies at all, you'll like this one. But if you can't stand slasher movies, you'll hate it.

My Score:  8/10  (The attacking forest didn't need to go that far.)
