Enya

Bio:

Eithne Ní Bhraonáin was born on May 17th 1961, in Dore Bartley, a small village in the region Gaoth Dobhair (Donegal County) in the northwest of Ireland. She is the fourth youngest of nine children: Máire (1952), Ciarán, Pól, Deirdre, Leon, Eithne (1961), Bartley, Olive, and Bridín. Her father Leo owns a local pub - Leo's Tavern in Mín na Leice. Her mother Baba taught music in the local school. All the Braonáin children were encouraged to take up music. Enya followed in her mother's footsteps and took piano lessons. In 1968 her uncles Pádraig and Noel Ó Dúgáin and elder brothers Ciarán & Pól formed the band "An Clann As Dobhar" and performed traditional Irish music at festivals. In 1973 they changed their name to Clannad and recruicted Enya's sister Máire. After that, the band have gone on to international success performing both their own and traditional material. Enya joined Clannad in 1980, after finishing school. She provided mostly backing vocals and keyboards. First time sha appeared in 1980 on Clannad's album Crann Ull (uncredited). First time, she was credited (under her real name) in 1982 on Clannad's album Fuaim. In 1982, when Clannad split with their manager and producer Nicky Ryan, Enya left the group and moved to Doublin to start her solo career. Her manager was still Nicky Ryan. Her first job came in 1985, when the film producer asked her to write music for The Frog Prince, after hearing her demo tapes. However, her music was rearranged and performed by others. In the movie cedits, she was called for the first time Enya Ní Bhraonáin. In 1986, BBC-TV started to work on a documentary series about the history and culture of the Celts. Enya was asked to white and perform the music. She did, and the series was first shown a year later, by the time Enya's first album (called simply Enya) with the Celts' sountrack showed up. However, the album went quite unnoticed. However, in the same year, Enya signed a contract with the head of Warner Music UK Rob Dickins, after he heard her first album. The good news was that Rob Dickins was known as quite successful by promoting "difficult" artists, even if it took years. The real breakthrough came in 1988 by releasing her album Watermark. The single "Orinoco Flow" scored pretty high in the charts and Enya became a starr.
