ARCADIA, Cal.-Funeral services will be held Tuesday for veteran jockey agent Camilo Marin, who passed away Thursday at Arcadia Methodist Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 72.

The services will be held at 11 a.m. at Holy Angels Church, 370 Campus Drive, Arcadia. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, at Glasser-Miller-Lamb Mortuary, 500 So. First Ave.

Born in Cuba on January 6, 1916, Mr. Marin was introduced to racing at Oriental Park in Havana when he was 16 years old. He began as an exercise rider, then was a groom, then in 1935, he handled his first jockey, Fernando Fernandez. The team moved back and forth between Cuba, Mexico and the United States until Fernandez retired in 1953. Coincidentally, Fernandez also died in Florida on Thursday. Later, Mr. Marin helped develop Manuel Ycaza, Braulio Baeza and Laffit Pincay, and over the years he also worked with riding stars like Alvaro Pineda, Walter Guerra, and Jorge Velasquez.

In 1985, Mr. Marin was inducted into the Oriental Park Hall of Fame at Calder Race Course.

Trainer Steve Ippolito, one of Mr. Marin's closest friends, described him as a "great jockey agent and a great man. People knew him at all the racetracks all over the country."

Owner-breeder Earl Scheib, another close friend, said, "Everybody loved him. He was very, very honest and would never tell a lie. Honesty was his trademark." -Mike Marten
