A LIFETIME OF MEMORIES

Officially dubbed THE FIRST ANNUAL MONTEREY INTERNATIONAL POP MUSIC FESTIVAL, the event provided a weekend filled with unique and amazing sights, sounds, and experiences. Two years before Woodstock, over 200,000 young people gathered in and around the Monterey County Fairgrounds for a three day celebration of MUSIC, PEACE, FLOWER-POWER AND LOVE.

Over 50 photos, quotes from participants, and my own hazy recollections of three glorious days of music, peace, flowers, and love. This weekend event has been heralded as the beginning of the...

Most of the performers appeared for free, with only lodging and travel expenses being provided. It was a time of reunion and discovery for the performers as well as the audience. Funds raised by the festival and subsequent film and CD sales were earmarked to The Monterey Pop Foundation which is still in existence today and providing help to worthwhile causes such as the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic.

Other writers have published volumes about Monterey Pop, so I will not attempt to go into the social or political ramifications of this 3 day festival. My goal is to share the personal experiences of one participant and post some photos which I hope you will enjoy.
PLEASE NOTE
I have received many e-mails saying, "You left out this or you left out that." Yes, many "this" and "thats" have been intentionally left out. And, that is because I didn't personally see, hear, or experience "this" or "that". This site is not intended to be a complete history of Monterey Pop or an index of events. This site is about what was seen, heard, and experienced many years ago by a 17 year old kid. Please accept it for what it is.
