Energy Resources

As far back as 1947, the historic Bewster Report concluded that the sources for electricity was sufficient "to meet the entire commercial and domestic requirements of the country." At that time, the government anticipated the development of hydro-electric power from the many rivers and waterfalls in the islands. In addition to the hydro dams, geothermal energy has been tapped from the numerous hot springs in Luzon and Visayas. The Philippines compares favorably to Switzerland in the development of hydro-electric power, and with the United States in its geothermal industry.

Vast reserves of oil and natural gas also lie underneath Philippine waters and yield productive oil veins in some inland areas like the Cagayan Valley. Previously, it was thought that the Philippines had little or no oil. But in the past two decades, offshore oil exploration has tapped highly promising deposits off Palawan, eventually near Borneo and Brunei. It is not inconceivable that the Indonesia and Malaysia - are major oil producers.

Coal deposits in Cebu, Batangas and other places contribute to the country's energy needs. And Filipinos have access, for their daily needs, to plentiful supplies of charcoal (from coconut husk) and wood fuel.
