SPIDER MONKEYS-Problem Many different species of spider monkeys are considered endangered. Some are listed as endangered in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela, Brazil, and Peru. Many of these spider monkeys live in the rain forest. |

Cause of Problem Humans have destroyed half of the rain forest in the past 200 years. Rain forests are being eliminated for timber, minerals, agriculture, and settlements. Other reasons are control of unoccupied territory and building roads. This is the spider monkey's habitat. |

Solutions There are several things that can be done to help stop the extinction of the spider monkey. The endangered species act was passed in 1973 to conserve threatened or endangered animals. Part of the act states that destroying habitat, which injures or kills an animal, is prohibited. Other ideas to help endangered spider monkeys are to establish protected areas where wildlife habitat is preserved, develop new ways to farm and log that preserves habitat, educate people about the importance of preserving wildlife, and enact more laws to protect animals. |
