A Brief history of Uncut

Uncut was formed in 1999 by three veterans of the Denver music scene: Neal Landauer (guitar, vocals), Aaron Langton (bass, vocals) and Mario Gonzales (drums). The three multi-instrumentalists had previously worked together in Denver area bands Fonksquish and Pepperment. Convinced that a smaller band was the best way to deliver their brand of "energy music" to a live audience, they began writing and rehearsing original material and began performing live all over the Denver area shortly thereafter. The following year, Uncut joined forces with funk and blues legend Richard "Kush" Griffith (vocals, trumpet), a veteran of Parliament/ Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley & the Horny Horns, and James Brown, among others. "Kush brings a new dimension to our live show," says Langton, "we do some of his songs, and he helps out on some of ours. His ability to connect with an audience is just incredible." Uncut is currently recording their first full-length album at Kyle Jones' (Judge Roughneck) Sleeping Brotherhood studios. They continue to play live "every chance we get."

garage soul?
"We're often asked what kind of music do you play?" says guitarist Landauer. "It's a tough question, because our music doesn't fit into any neat categorization." Uncut's music draws on the funk and R&B of the 60's and 70's, along with more contemporary hip-hop and rock influences and a healthy dose of the blues. They call it "garage soul" or "energy music." In their music, you'll hear the influence of Funkadelic, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Fishbone, Sly Stone, and others. As one fan put it, "Uncut sounds very current, and at the same time very familiar."

uncut has played at...
