We
take the Supportico Marinella again, this time to the left on via
S.Sebastiano, and then straight ahead to come out in front of
S MARIA DEL BANDO
Built
in XII century, so named because from the covered gallery came
the proclamation of those elected to the Dukedom, or in another version
the names of those condemned to death. Tradition has it that the Virgin
Mary interceded for a man unjustly condemned to be hanged . The episode
is shown in a painting of the fourteenth century above the altar next to
the Madonna and Child , in the left hand is portrayed a man in
adoration who has a broken knot around his neck.
.
Worth noting:: a
Cinerary Urn from the Julius- Claudius dynasty, and a precious majolica
pavement...
Nowadays from the high rocks proclamations are not sent down but the
much more spectacular Stella Cometa (Star-Comet) , that on
Christmas Eve every year brings good wishes for residents and tourists...
Accompanied by
the sweet music of the zampone ( a reed pipe), in the magical little
square , altogether to sing and wait for the scintillating comet that at
the stroke of midnight , with fireworks and to the ringing of bells,
passes through the sky of Atrani...
Then after good
wishes , with Panettone and Champagne in hand, New Year Eve arrives:
with the exhibition of a local musical folklore group ,the
Stagnariello.
Near the small
Church , the antique House of Gargano, that belonged to the
maternal grand-parents of Masaniello ( who was half-Atranese), and the
more famous Grotto of Masaniello: a small natural cavity where in
1643, hunted down by the soldiers of the Vicerè of Naples, tradition
has it the hero took refuge...
