ANGIOINA.
DIFFICULTY: EASY
TIME: 3hrs
Find yourselves a boat and follow the beach until the Norman Tower. The
base of the bastion on the eastern side has a small entrance, it is to
the GROTTA SULFUREA (Sulphur Cave), or "SUFFREGNA" as
the locals call it, on the seabed a jet of volcanic water...
In times not to
remote this water was used for therapeutic ends, it has qualities that
make it antitoxic and it is mildly laxative, it was also used for many
skin diseases. A large quantity of this water is always present at local
festivals and Sagras, perfumed with lemon slices, you can drink it too
but if the smells is too strong you can always ask a local
country-worker to give you a lemon...
Leaving the Cave,
we find the small fjord of Salicerchie, named after its circular shape
or maybe the "Plaiaquerqua", an ancient oak that can be found
there...
A few minutes
later and we find THE GROTTO PANNONA or "PANDORA's
CAVE", in the second world war on allied submarine hid there, but
for us it is enough just to enjoy the enchanted scenery, emerald with a
rain of bizarre shaped stalactites...
Almost joined to
it "Cala Bellavaia", better known, as the BEACH
"OF THE DEAD HORSE " because from it's high cliffs in the past
old and tired horses came to the end of their run; but the beauty of the
place takes one's breath away. The beach of minute stones is closed
between high walls of white rock, the water has an unreal transparency,
the temptation is to fall a sleep lying on the waterline...
Resisting the
temptation we aim for Capodorso. Above our heads the imposing TOWER DI
BADIA, and behind the CATACOMBS OF S. MARIA DE OLEARIA, this is the
wildest part of the coast, a high rockface, rugged and steep like the
promontory of Capodorso, that dives into the semicircle of sea to
reappear again in the "SECCA DEL GAETANO" called after a
sailor from Gaeta who lost his life there in the XVI century ....
In the escalation
of gorges, pinnacles and rocks with fantastic profiles "A CAP R'ORSO"
(the head of the bear) that gives its name to the place, a flight of
steps that lead up to the white lighthouse and providential light ...
Rounding the Capo
(head) we arrive to the TUMMOLO TOWER, the point where in 1528 the
thousand dead of the Battle of Capo D'Orso are buried, you can almost
hear the shouts, the shots, and the victory cry of Filippino Doria (grandson
at the famous Andrea), who at the head of the French fleet attacked the
Governor of Naples, Don Ugo de Mancada, who was hurrying to Naples
besieged by the Angevins...
A little further
ahead near the rocks, a small beach surrounded by spurs of rock (
destroyed in the 1960 by estractions of the ILVA factory) Erchie, with a
large sandy beach, small houses and the large tower (Torre Angioina)
towards the east ...
Behind the tower
another small beach, with crystal water an ideal place for someone who
seeks nature e solitude...
