SpectraPure Reverse Osmosis Units
In order to maintain constant water conditions, it is necessary to purify
the water used to top off the evaporation losses and when performing your standard 5-to10%
water changes. This water must be low in nitrates, PO4 and silica. Silica is responsible
for the growth of the brown diatom algae in your aquarium. Some silica is required for
sponge growth but too much leads to unsightly brown masses on your rocks. Only thin
film RO units should be used for the Reef . These units are the best on the market!
You can start with a stardard countertop two stage unit and if needed add a DI unit
later. Standard conductivity rejection overall of >98%! CHP-35 with Pressure gauge(add

Having Trouble with that Brown Algae mass on your live rock?
Solution: Brown algae is caused by diatoms in your tank. They feed on the silica
most likely in your makeup water. If you have a silica level in your make up water greater
than 1 ppm then your Reverse Osmosis unit may not be removing enough of your silica.
Remember we want to leave some silica for the sponges and shell formation of our
invertibrates. The remaining silica can be removed by adding a D.I. unit AFTER your R.O.
unit.

Having Trouble finding a place for your RO unit?
One possible solution is to get a adaptor for your shower head to accept the 3/4 in hose
line. The bottle of water can be placed in the tub and any over flow goes down the drain
and not on the floor. Remember to use water below 110 F. 80 to 90 F water works great.
Cold water will reduce your output but works okay.
