Artist Statement:
I have always aspired to being an artist: majored in art at
college, worked freelance in jewelry and fashion, then spent many years
managing a college bookstore. But I was always doodling, drawing and
painting.
As soon as I finish a painting I can hardly wait to start
another. The themes, style and shapes progress from one to another as if
they have a life of their own. I used to “do” oils: Rocky Mountains with
aspen and evergreens and I painted Southwestern adobes and cactus with the
wonderful colors of New Mexico. I experimented with watercolor. That’s where
I wanted to be! I love the loose way of wet in wet: I love to mix colors you
would never think would produce a nice color.
I call my works “rambling geometrics.” They are not
mechanical. Indeed, the flow of line and color leads one through a
never-ending path of shapes, curls and whirls. The paintings are fun to
execute; little stories emerge, but even they can change with each viewing.
I delight in the comment of a viewer who said my paintings foster joy and
bring
happiness. That, in itself, is satisfaction for me.
