Artist Statement:
Shifting Perspective series:
Either by shifting the stained glass panels along the frame's tracks or by
shifting your position you can change the scene you view. Life isn't
constant. Neither are these pieces.
Stained glass allows me to exercise my love of line1,
color2,
and texture3.
I enjoy working in two distinct styles.
Like building a house, every line and piece is carefully planned and
diagrammed before construction in the traditional stained glass method. This
method allows me to clearly visualize the finished piece during the design
stage.
In the spontaneous method, I react to individual shards or pieces of glass,
stones and other objects spread over my work table to find what binds them
together into a meaningful piece. The work is then composed based on the
shapes, color and texture that exists in the odd bits that I have collected.
Each method presents its own challenges, but the finished work of both
methods contain the drama of transformation. Depending on its illumination,
stained glass can change radically in character throughout the day. This
shifting character serves as a reminder of the constant presence of change
in our lives.
Footnotes:
1. I began cartooning in high school and later trained as a commercial
artist.
2. Working with the artist Linda Fishman, I discovered the adventure
possible in using color boldly.
3. No reason. I just like it.
