Artist Statement

Janet Higgins comes to AMBUS ART Gallery after living in Southern Oregon for the last 10 years.  Previous to finding her home in Grants Pass in 1993 she lived in Hong Kong for 9 years.  She grew up in the Bay Area in California and earned a Bachelor degree in Fine Art from the University of California at Berkeley. Janet expresses her art in a variety of media including watercolor and acrylic painting but is currently involved in sculpture utilizing clay and steel as her mediums.  Janet describes her current figurative work as "talking gestures", a type of body language that communicates in one simple movement or posture an immediate understanding of how they feel.  "They depict a sense of movement, familiar posture or a kind of mid-air thought that many of us have shared at one moment or another".

Janet has exhibited her work in Oregon, Washington, California, and New York, and in a number of galleries in Hong Kong throughout her 9 year stay. While living in Southern Oregon she has also enjoyed set building and painting for a number of local theaters as well as teaching both art and ballet in her new home town where she lives with her husband John and their 3 children, Casey, Tom and Maddy.
