Artist Statement
My fascination with paper mache evolved from teaching
experiences as an art teacher at Silverton High School (Oregon) witnessing
the waste, yet recyclable possibilities of paper. Beginning with the age-old
project of paper mache over balloons to create masks, I worked in earnest to
explore this versatile medium, gradually time flipping teaching and art
creating until I made a complete break from the public schools to devote
myself full-time to art! My career in the public schools lasted 9 years; as
an artist it has been almost as long, and hopefully well beyond!
Paper mache allows endless possibilities for experimentation.
Fundamentally, I am interested in exploring sculptural forms, and utilizing
materials in my environment to provide engineering support. Once a form is
complete another exciting challenge exists in surface decoration. Again, I
experiment with delicious techniques, as decorative painting, gilt
surfacing, decorative collage, even assemblage! My sensibility requires
color, so often my work is festooned with cheerfully bright decorated
papers. Equally exciting is to go beyond my comfort zone to create
non-objective forms, and sculptures in neutral surfaces.
My work can be seen at AMBUS ART in Jacksonville, and 369UP
in Ashland,
OR.
I teach mask-making as part of the Artist-in-Schools Residency Program with
the Southern Oregon Arts Council, and offer paper mache workshops through
associated galleries.
