This article concerns the murder of J. Frank Carlock - h/o Susan Louisa Hembree who was the d/o Joel Thomas Hembree
and Sarah Marcum.

"Everton Man Killed
Frank Carlock, for years
a prominant business man at Everton, Mo., was shot and killed by William 'Billy' Schmulbach, veteran merchant policeman of
Picher, Okla., as Carlock stepped out of his drug store at Picher, Saturday morning.
Mr. Carlock for several years
had been in business at Picher after selling out his interests at Everton, but his family still lives in the Dade county town,
and he is widely known there.
No motive for the shooting at Pitcher [sic] was apparent. Spectators said no quarrel
preceded it. Schmulcach [sic], who fired the fatal shot, has been tried twice for murder in Ottawa County, Okla., and was
acquitted both times.
Mr. Carlock was about 50 years old. He was born and reared in the neighborhood of Everton and
brought up his children there. His wife and mother, Mrs. Frances Carlock, live in Everton now.
He is survived by four
children, Mrs. Frances Adamson, of Everton; Mrs. Marjorie Adamson, of Miller; Tarrant Carlock whose home is in Everton but
who now is believed to be working upon a construction project near Lebanon, and a younger son, Frank, Jr., who is in school
at Marshall, Mo. A brother, Henry Carlock, also lives in Everton."

Thomas Hembree ~ 1924 - 1941
Thomas Hembree was born 1924 in Kennewick, Benton County, Washington, USA. He died December 7,
1941 in Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA
United States Navy Seaman Apprentice. Killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on
December 7, 1941. Two days later, Hembree, of Kennewick, Wash., a 17-year-old crewman on the seaplane tender USS Curtis, was
buried as an unknown in the civilian Nuuanu Cemetery in Honolulu. He and another sailor were exhumed in 1947 for identification
but Hembree's remains were returned to his grave still unidentified. His remains were transferred to National Memorial in
1949. He was disinterred again in January 2001, and specialists at the Army's Central Identification Laboratory-Hawaii used
dental records and a skeletal analysis of his remains to identify him. He was reburied with full military honors on March
5. 2001.

Edward Hembree ~ 1877 - 1955
Oswalt man to be Buried Saturday.
Funeral services for James Edward Hembree will be held Saturday afternoon at 3
o'clock with the Rev. W.S. Lindsay of Ardmore officiating. He will be assisted by Rev. Rose Zella Criner of the Marietta Assembly
of God Church. The place of the service had not been decided upon Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Hembree died Wednesday night at his
home at Oswalt following a lengthy illness.
He was born June 16, 1877 in Mississippi and on June
16, 1905 he was married to Miss Willie White. They were the parents of 11 children, 10 whom survive.
Mr. Hembree had lived in the Oswalt community
for many years and was a well known Love County Farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Willie
Hembree of the home; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Phillips of Santa Paula Calif. Mrs. Vida Jackson
of Oswalt, Mrs. Hettie Nelson of Popular, Calif. and Mrs. Laura Grubbs of Ft. Worth ; six sons Lonnie, William, George,
James l, J.W., and Odie Hembree of Oswalt, and one brother Wright Hembree of McCory, Arkansas, 17 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren,
and 3 nieces.
Goodrich Funeral home is in charge of arrangements and the following
have been asked to serve as Pall Bearers; Charlie and Ocie Tucker, Byrd Johnson, Edgar Wilson, Elvin and J.M. Jackson.
ISAAC McDANIEL HEMBREE ~ 1867 - 1956

at the age of 89 years, 2 months and 16 days.
ISAAC McDANIEL HEMBREE, son of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN HEMBREE (b. 1 May 1842;
d. 15 June 1932) and JULIANN (PINKLEY) HEMBREE (b. 27 November 1841- d. 4 March 1925), was born 5 February 1867 (Isaac was born on the day his grandfather, JOHN HEMBREE, died). He was born in Dallas
County, Missouri and was married to ADA SHARP in 1889. To this union three children were born: one died in infancy (Ada
died soon afterwards). The survivors are: MYRTLE (HEMBREE) LEMONS of Los Angeles, California and BENJAMIN ROBERT HEMBREE of
Springfield, Missouri. After Ada's death, he was married in 1894 to OVANDA WEEKS (my grandmother), who died in 1930. The children
surviving from this marriage are: INEZ MAYE (HEMBREE) SHARP - BLAIR, IDA McKINLEY (HEMBREE) ALLMAN (my mother), both of Buffalo,
Missouri; IDYLE MARIE (HEMBREE) BETHEL, ROY ALBERT HEMBREE, INA MAUDE (HEMBREE) ALDERSON, JAMES CHESTER HEMBREE, all
of California; JULIANN (HEMBREE) BLACKWELL of Seminole, Oklahoma.
In 1932 he was married to ANN (HOOVER) HOWERTON who still survives. He leaves the above
named and one sister, NANCY (HEMBREE) WEEKS of Conway, Missouri; one brother, HENRY HEMBREE of Commerce, Oklahoma; 22 grandchildren,
36 great grandchildren, and 4 great, great grandchildren and 4 stepchildren.
In 1940 he joined the Baptist Church in Conway and remained
in that church. He said he was ready to go any time the Lord called him that he was at peace with God. He bore his long suffering
with patience. He spent his entire life in Dallas County where he worked hard
and helped rear his family.
Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery,
southern Dallas County, under the direction of the Montgomery Funeral Home of Buffalo.

Funeral services for J.W. Hembree
Services for J.W. Hembree were held Friday, November 24, at 2:00 pm in the First Baptist Church in Marietta
with the Rev. W.P. Powland as the officiating minister.
Mr. Hembree died November 21, following a brief illness. He was born May 19, 1928 at Oswalt and had lived his
entire life in Love County where he had worked as a carpenter. On December 3, 1949, he was married to Mary Cavins in Gainesville,
Texas.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Mary Hembree of the home in Marietta; two sons, Randall Hembree of Marietta
and Kelly Hembree of the home; three daughters, Sue Warthen of Marietta, Patsy Payne of Mannsville, La. and Sandy Hembree
of the home; four brothers, George (Mutt) Hembree, Les Hembree and Odie Hembree, all of Overbrook, and Jim Hembree of Oologah;
four sisters, Mary Phillips of Santa Paula, Calif. Netty Nelson of Fillmore, Calif. Laura (Polly) Grubbs of Ft. Worth, and
Vida Jackson of Ardmore and four grandchildren. Interment in the Simon Cemetery was under the direction of the
Goodrick Anderson Funeral Home. Serving as casket bearers were J.M Jackson, Charles Harris, Leighton Flannagan, Harvey Stewart,
Edgar Wilson and Olen Vernon.

Hembree ~ 1932-1979
Ewell Hembree,
46, died at his residence on Route 1 in Berea, Monday, Feb. 12, 1979 following a heart attack.
A resident of Madison County, he was an insulation contractor and a member of the Middletown Baptist Church. He also belonged
to the Mason Lodge 617 and had served in the U.S. Air Force.
Masonic services were held Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in
the Dula and Scudder Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah "Adair" Hembree; three sons, Ewell Edward Hembree,
Corwin Scott Hembree, and David Michael Hembree, all on Rt. 1, Berea; and three daughters, Mary Ellen "Hembree" Estes, Birmingham,
Alabama, Olevia Jane Hembree and Teresa Dawn Hembree, both of Berea.
He was also survived by five brothers, Joe Willis
Hembree, Franklin, Ohio; William Howard Hembree, West Liberty, Kentucky; Edward L. Hembree, Charles and Israel Mason Hembree
all of Berea, Kentucky; and by a sister Malinda Jane "Hembree" Alexander also of Berea, Kentucky. He had two grand children
at the time of his death and a grand daughter born the night he died.
Services were conducted at the Middletown Baptist
Church at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14 by the Rev. Denton Sears and the Rev. David Cook. Burial followed in the Pilot Knob Cemetery.
The Dula and Scudder Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Albert Evans, Paul Coomer, Howard Woodson,
Reuben Kinder, Bill Spradling and Warre Walcott.

Obituary:
Vernon died at the age of 73. He was a native of Berea, KY. He passed away early Wednesday morning May 13, 1992
at the Lee County Community Hospital in Pennington Gap, Virginia. He had lived in the Atlanta, Georgia area for about 20 years. Before moving to Lee County approximately 10 years ago. As a young man, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and was also a member of the U.S. Navy
Seabees. He was a retired truck driver having worked for an Automobile Transport
Commercial Carrier. He was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church of Berea,
KY. and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamster Local 528, Atlanta, Georgia.

Sarah "Sadie" Hembree ~ 1934-1992
Sarah "Sadie" (Adair) Hembree, 58, of Menelaus Road in Berea, died this morning at the Berea Hospital. She was a native
of Scotland, and a resident of Berea for most of her life.
She was cafeteria manager at the Bluegrass Army Depot Lexington Activity and a member of the Middletown Baptist Church. She
was the daughter of the late James Adair (Scotland) and the widow of the late Ewell Hembree (Berea, Kentucky).
She is survived
by her mother, Nellie Jess Gibb of England; three sons, Ewell Hembree and Mike Hembree of Berea, Ky.; Scott Hembree of Richmond,
Ky.; three daughters, Jane Hembree of Berea, KY., Dawn Hembree-Brown of Paint Lick, Ky. And Mary "Hembree" Estes of Huntsville,
Alabama; three brothers, Angus Adair, James Adair, and Andy Adair all of England; two sisters, Helen Adair, Wisconsin and
Moira Adair of England; 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Reppert Funeral Home
with the Rev. Earl Van Winkle and the Rev. Denton Sears officiating. Burial will follow in the Pilot Knob Cemetery. Visitation
will be Friday from 5 - 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will include Kenny Hembree, J.T. Hembree, Ricky Hembree,
Marty Hembree, Bruce Hembree, and Carl Alexander. Honorary pallbearers will include Kenny Pickle and Randy Gottschalk.

Lois Jane Hester Hembree,
65, of Oliver Springs, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville.
Mrs.
Hembree had lived in Roane County all her life and was a member of Kellytown Baptist Church of Oliver Springs.
She
enjoyed embroidering and was an active bowler before her health declined.
She was born in Kingston on
Nov. 2, 1933. She was the widow of Herbert Hembree.
Mrs. Hembree is survived by her father, Elmer Hester
of Harriman; her daughter, Brenda Lewis and her husband, Mike, of Maryville; two sons, David Hester and his wife, Lois, of
Harriman, and Ben Hembree of Knoxville; and her granddaughter, Melissa Beeler and her husband, Brian, of Maryville.
She
is also survived by her sister, Imogene McCollough and her husband, Bob, of Harriman; and two brothers, Carl Hester and his
wife, Cathy, and Bill Hester and his wife, Dorcas, all of Harriman.
In addition to her husband, her mother,
Mary Helen Campbell Hester, and another sister, Bonnie Morgan, died earlier.
The funeral will be held
at 8 tonight, Dec. 17, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Tommy Hensley officiating.
A
graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at the Hester Family Cemetery in Sugar Grove Valley.
The
family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Howell James Hembree, 81, of Oak Ridge,
died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville.
Mr. Hembree retired from the city of Oak Ridge in 1979.
He served a short time with the U.S. Army during World War II
before receiving a medical discharge.
Mr. Hembree was a member of Tuckaleechee Primitive Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Sullivan Hembree;
his daughter, Barbara Shuler and her husband, Lynn, of Oak Ridge; his grandson, Travis Shuler, also of Oak Ridge; his brothers
and sisters-in-law, Thannah Hembree and Edna Trentham, both of Townsend, Paul Hembree of Walland, Lucy and Ray Huskey of Maryville,
and Ruth Hembree of Kingston; and by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held Sunday night, Feb. 28, in the chapel of Memorial
Funeral Home in Maryville with the Rev. Kenneth Sullivan officiating.
Family and friends were to meet at 1 this afternoon, March 1,
at Oak Ridge Memorial Park for a graveside service.

2001 after Cardiac Arrest. Following graduation from Central high School, he married Mary Lucy Cowley, lived in San Antonio,
TX for ten yrs., returning to Nashville for the remainder of his life in 1943. He was widowed in 1989 after 56 yrs. of marriage.
An accountant, he served as Treasurer of Hoover Motor Express, Capital International Airways and McKendree Methodist Church.
A role model gentleman and devoted family member. He is survived by his son, Dr. Wylie Hembree III; daughter-in-law, Christina
Gruning Hembree; grandson, Marc William Hembree, all of New Jersey; granddaughter, Amanda Cowley Hembree of New York City;
sister, Katie Mae Johnson of Jasper, TX; brother, Paul Hembree of Brentwood, TN. Services to celebrate his life will be held
at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 6th with Rev. Skip Armistead officiating. Interment to follow
at Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers: Paul Hembree, Marc Hembree, Paul Ricks, Clement Greek III, William Sudekum, Bob Rucker.

Shirley Ann Hembree, 59, of Oliver Springs, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
She was born Feb. 1, 1943, in Roane County and had been a lifelong resident of this area.
Mrs. Hembree was a project manager for Future Research Corp. of Oak Ridge.
She attended Dyllis Baptist Church.
Mrs. Hembree is survived by her husband of 41 years, Jack Hembree; three sisters, Linda Rose and her
husband, Bill, of Oliver Springs, and Brenda Duncan and her husband, Jim, and Donna Arakawa and her husband, Dave, all of
Harriman; a sister-in-law she considered special, Alice Thacker of Oliver Springs; her nieces and nephews, Tracy Broyles,
Dusty Duncan, Jason Duncan, Bryan Arakawa, Jeanenne Thacker, Ginger White, Tim Dayton, Allen Dayton, Mike Johnson and Clancy
Johnson; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Paris L. and Ruby Henley Hatmaker.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Feb. 26, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs
with the Rev. Waylon Payne officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Dyllis Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

George Hunt Hembree, of Wilmington,
Del., died at home on Oct. 11, 2002, following a brief illness. Mr. Hembree, a native of
Richmond, was born on Sept. 2, 1930. He was the son of the late George Nelson Hembree and Grace Hembree Orttenburger.
His
wife, Betty Williams Hembree, died in 1990. He is survived by his children, George H. Hembree Jr., of Anchorage, Alaska, Elizabeth
Hembree Blumberg, Wilmington, Del., Susan G. Sanborn, of Rumson, N.J.; and nine grandchildren, Thomas and Andrew Hembree,
Jessica, Benjamin and Jonathan Blumberg, Rachael, Raymond Rebecca and Jacob Sanborn.
Mr. Hembree, a graduate of Eastern
Kentucky University, acquired his doctorate in chemistry from Ohio State University. Mr. Hembree was a research chemist and
laboratory director with the DuPont Company. He retired in 1987. Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct.
15 at the Richmond Cemetery with Dr. James Cox officiating.
Turpin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. There will
be no visitation.
Pallbearers will be Samuel Blumberg, Ron Sanborn, Raymond Sanborn, Thomas Hembree, Andrew Hembree and
Robert Williams.

She was born in Tulsa, Okla., Aug. 11, 1920, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (McGuire) Coffey. She was
a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church of Miamisburg. Her greatest love was her home and family.
She is survived by
four daughters, Leota (Curt) Hicks of Carrie, Doris Cox of Franklin, Ohio, Mary Davidson of Mt. Vernon and Lois (Dan) Kammer

Hembree of Carlisle, Ohio; 27 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; a brother, Luther Coffey

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in 1993; and by a son,
Glendel, in 1999.

Kirk, 88, a resident of Lebanon, Ohio for 62 years, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Lebanon Country
Manor Nursing Home.
Viola was born in Knox County, Ky., on April 27, 1914, to Joe and Matilda (Bays) Hembree and became
a dedicated homemaker and mother. She was also a charter member of the Urbancrest Baptist Church in Lebanon.
Viola
was preceded in death by her first husband Bige Malicote; her second husband, William R. Kirk; five brothers, Edward, Walter,
Joe, Paul and Vernon Hembree; and two grandchildren.
Survivors include three sons, William Malicote of Hillsboro,
and Don Malicote and Robert Malicote, both of Lebanon; a daughter, Barbara Greene of Lebanon; a stepson, Richard Kirk of Hillsboro;
a stepdaughter, Billie Sue Goble of Hillsboro; two brothers, Ward Hembree of Trenton and J. B. Hembree of Germantown; 16 grandchildren;
and numerous great-grandchildren.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Oswald-Hoskins Funeral Home in Lebanon. Funeral

HEMBREE, JOSEPHINE SEXTON - passed away Sunday, January 26, 2003, after an extended
illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Marion Hembree, and son, Thomas Dewey Hembree; parents, Ernie Goodman
Sexton and Riley Sexton; sisters, Ida Hamby, Nora Acres, Flonnie Webb, and Flora Sexton; brothers, Gilbert Sexton, Albert
Sexton, and Lonnie Sexton. She was third born of thirteen children in Cortland, Tennessee, on January 16, 1910. She
moved to Norris with her family in 1944, when her husband was transferred there by the TVA. She was well known for her independent
nature, devotion to her family, sewing, and working in her yard whenever weather permitted. Survivors: daughters, Marion
Jo Hembree Markham of Loganville, Ga., and Vina Isabelle Hembree McIntosh of Tucker, Ga.; daughter-in- law, Esther McClung

Hembree, 63, passed away Feb. 1, 2003 at his home in OKC from a heart attack. He was a carpenter
by trade and has worked for Robert Brown Construction and Manning Construction companies most of the last years of his life.
He was born Nov. 11, 1939 at Farris, OK to Harmon and Hazel (Shatswell) Hembree. He was preceded in death by his parents;
one son Ricky Gerald Hembree in Sept 1993, and his former wife Vonda who he will be resting beside in death, since he never
got over her. Survivors include one son, Stanton L. of Warr Acres; one grandson, Stanton Tyler; two brothers, Elvin Leon of
Del City, and Harmon Hembree, Jr. and wife Sinda of OKC; many nephews, nieces, and lots of friends. Services will be at 2:00
P.M., Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003 at Baggerley-South Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Norman,

of her life. She married Walter Phillips and has four children. She was 85
years of age.

Leon Earl Hembree, 78, longtime Oak View resident and recently
of Albuquerque, N.M., died Monday, March 31, 2003, after a lengthy illness.
He was born
Sept. 20, 1924 in Farris, Okla., and had been a Ventura County resident since the age of 9, living in Ventura for several
years and then in Oak View.
Mr. Hembree was a general contractor, owner of Hembree Construction, for more than 40 years,
building and remodeling many homes throughout Ventura County, including the Ventura Baptist Church where he was a member for
many years.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lois, of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter Patsy Tatlock of Greenacres, Wa.;
stepdaughter and son-in-law Sue and Dick Sutton of Angel Fire, N.M.; stepdaughter Dale O'Donnell of Paradise, Calif.; and
several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Brenda Murphy, of Houston, Texas.
Mr.
Hembree was a member of Ventura Missionary Church until moving to Albuquerque.

A native of Hart County, Mr. Hembree was a son of
the late Columbus and Nettie Hembree. He was retired from Hartwell Garment with 50 years of service and was a Reliv Distributor.
He was a member of Lions International for 50 years, was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award, and had 50 years of perfect
attendance. He was a member of Hartwell First Baptist Church and former member of the Andrews Sunday School Class.

You said that you wanted information about obits of any Hembree's in our family and I
just have to tell you about my uncle, Roger Hembree. He was my mother (Imozell Clara Vickery [nee Hembree's]) older brother.
We have just buried my uncle's wife (Glenda Jane Smith[Nee Smith]. Her husband was Eddie Michael Hembree, also my mom's brother.
Getting back to the story, we had buried Glenda on the 29th of March, 2006 and on the 30th of March, 2006, my uncle died of
a heart-attack, while cutting the grass in his back-yard. Here is the link to his obit:

Roger Hembree, 63, of 14 South 6th St., Woodside, went to be with the Lord on March
30, 2006.
A son of the late Mr. John C. Hembree and Viola Crider. He is also predeceased by two stepsons, Phillip
and Charles Wilbanks; a sister, Shirlene Lamb; and a brother, William B. Hembree.
He
was of the Church of God faith, and worked as a painter before retiring. He loved being around his family, and he will be
dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Norma Jean Hembree of the home; two stepchildren,
Teresa Harkins of Greenville and Darrell Wilbanks of Dacusville, S.C.; three sisters, Clara Vickery and Judy Patterson, both
of Greenville, and Jean Hughes of Powdersville; four brothers, Bobby,
Robert, and Eddie Hembree, all of Greenville, and Johnny Hembree of Simpsonville; nine step grandchildren, one of which was
very special to papa, Cheyenne; four step great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be tonight
from 7 to 9 p.m. at Westville Funeral Home. Church service will be Sunday,
April 2, 2006, at 1 p.m., in the Agnew Road Church of God, with Pastor Johnny H. Bingham officiating the service. Burial following
in the New Salem Cemetery, Calhoun Falls, S.C.
Flowers are ok. The family is at the home of his sister, Judy Patterson,
10 Oak St., Greenville.

Funeral services for Willie Mae Hembree Cook, 83, of Lovonia, Mich., are Friday, June 2,
2006, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Spann Funeral Home with Bro. Robert Cullum officiating. Burial will be in Baggetts Chapel
Cemetery.
Mrs. Cook died Saturday, May 27, 2006, in
Michigan.
Survivors include four sons, Tommy (Cathy) Neblett of Arizona, Hershel (Angelen) Hembree,
of Lovonia, Mich., Gary (Carol) Hembree of Royal Oaks, Mich., and Steve Hembree of Kentucky; two brothers, James Jones of
Alabama and Lloyd Jones of Michigan; three sisters, Dorothy Rakipi, Wilma Kendred and Shirley Fizer, all of Dickson; seven
grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Beadie Jones; and sister, Ruth Antocski.

Truman L. Age 82, Northridge, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2006, at Hospice of Dayton. Truman was born August 8, 1923 in
Caryville, TN to Columbus & Gracie (Prater) Hembree who preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his wife
of over 40 years, Betty J. (Young) Hembree, who died in 1998; and by his siblings, Edith Letner, Lonzo Hembree, Christina
Harrison, Leonard Hembree, and Jimmy Hembree. Truman is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Pamela & John Engle of
Beavercreek; three grandchildren, Lindsey, Vanessa and Ian Matthew; siblings, Hazel Settlemire of Toledo, Mary Lou Rogalski,
Marie Daugherty, Betty Hill, all of Michigan, Margie Hicks of Dayton, Earl Hembree of LaFollette, Tennessee, Barbara Daugherty
of Orlando, Florida and Billy Lasley of Chicago, Illinois. Truman was a member of the Northridge Freewill Baptist church.
He retired in 1988 from the Inland Division of General Motors with 35 years of service. During WW II he served in the U. S.
Army. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, June 26, at the Northridge Freewill Baptist Church, 4800 Payne Ave.,
Dayton. Pastor Tim Hamilton will officiate. Interment will follow at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be receiving
friends from 4:00 – 6:00 PM, Sunday, at Newcomer Funeral Home & Crematory Beavercreek Chapel, 3380 Dayton-Xenia

laid to rest Tuesday

Eddie Ray Hembree Jr., 77, of Scottsboro, a successful businessman,
Purple Heart recipient and one of the city’s top supporters, was laid to rest in Cedar Hill Cemetery Tuesday afternoon.
Funeral services were conducted at Scottsboro Funeral Home with Mr. Hembree’s longtime
friend back to school days, Dr. Jim Thompson, conducting.
Mr. Hembree, owner of Hembree Insurance agency on the Courthouse Square, was involved in several business and industrial
ventures. He was president of the Greater Jackson County Chamber of Commerce for two years, 1962 and 1963, and was an extremely
close friend of the late Mayor John T. Reid during Scottsboro’s booming industrial years of the 1960s.
Attorney Jack Livingston said Mr. Hembree had been an entrepreneurial,
enterprising person all of his life, and had a keen sight on industrial prospects and industrial development, and worked hand-in-hand
with the Alabama Development Office for a long time.
Livingston said Mr. Hembree worked on up to about two months ago, then did a lot from his house.
Rick Roden, President/CEO of the Greater Jackson County Chamber
of Commerce, said Mr. Hembree was a leader in the community for many, many years and confirmed he was president of the Chamber
for two years during the early 1960’s.
Roden said, Mr. Hembree was always a “big player in business and negotiations in Jackson County. He will be
sorely missed.”
Scottsboro City
Clerk Gail Duffey said the city is especially appreciative of Mr. Hembree for all of the work he did at Goose Pond Colony.
He was one of the first board members to serve the Park and Recreation Board of Goose Pond. She added, “then we had
the city’s liability insurance with him for years and he really took care of us. He was a special friend.”
Bill Gross of Scottsboro said, “Mr. Hembree was in the regular
Army at the same time the Scottsboro Guard unit was in Korea, but in a different unit. A few of them might have gotten to
see Hembree at least one time while we were over there, but I could be wrong. They don’t come any better than Eddie
Ray. He was a fine fellow.”
Dr.
Ralph Sheppard described Hembree as a true friend. “I got to know him when I first came to Scottsboro (1951). He was
raised by an uncle, Lyles Hembree, and his wife, Mrs. Ella Hembree. Eddie Ray started out as a boy selling popcorn on the
square. He was a true entrepreneur. He loved Scottsboro. He had two sayings, ‘Be nice to everyone on the way up because
you might need them on the way down.’ He also said ‘don’t burn bridges behind you.’ He was behind
everything good for Scottsboro, a true sportsman, he loved Alabama, and was very instrumental in development of Goose Pond
Island. He was a man who was on the board of First National Bank. People came to him for advice and I don’t think he
ever steered anyone wrong. He was a true friend to me. He supported me in the newspaper and radio station, but he stood for
anything that was good for Scottsboro.”
Sheppard said, “Eddie Ray will be missed because he was a true leader, a level headed businessman, and I never
heard anything bad about him. He was a hustler. Mr. Hembree was in China in the Korean war.
He was a fine man.”
Mr. Hembree received a Purple Heart after being shot in Korea.
Ralph Powell and Hembree grew up together, being classmates in grade school.
“We grew up together from little children, and went to school
together through all of grades.” Powell said, “Eddie Ray was always a businessman. I would like to say from worms
to riches. He started out selling worms in school, popcorn and shaved ice on the square and at ballgames. He was into jukeboxes
and machines, then insurance and other endeavors including the textile business.”
He was a team manager and afterwards played football, basketball and baseball for Jackson
County High School, according to Powell. He loved Scottsboro and really cared for his family and the school.
One of his favorite sayings was, “well, it could be worse.
I could be in a foxhole in Korea,” Powell noted.
Hembree obviously had some rough times in Korea. There are stories circulating he once fired a machine gun so long
and fast, the gun got so hot, it melted.

Moody of Scottsboro said, “Eddie Ray was a real asset to Scottsboro. He worked hard trying to get industry in Scottsboro
and was instrumental in acquiring Goose Pond for the Revere plant. In addition to working on other industrial parks, he was
a great person and will be sorely missed.”

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 5 at Scottsboro Funeral Home Chapel with
Dr. Jim Thompson officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Hembree is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Hembree Harding of Scottsboro; grandchildren,
Robert Hembree Harding and wife, Kelly of Scottsboro, Leah Elizabeth Harding of Scottsboro and Thomas Hunter Harding of Scottsboro;
and half brother, Lee Morris Harrington of Houston, Texas.
