West Inks New Deal
On September 3, Lakers Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Jerry West signed a four-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the end of the 2002-03 season.

Shaquille O'Neal averaged 30.5 ppg and 10.2 rpg in the playoffs.

Lakers Draft Recap
With the 26th pick in the 1998 NBA Draft, the Lakers selected Minnesota's Sam Jacobson. The club later took Cincinnati's Ruben Patterson with the 31st pick and UCLA's Toby Bailey with the 45th pick.
In a draft day deal, the Lakers acquired Tony Battie and the draft rights to Tyronn Lue from Denver in exchange for Nick Van Exel.
In a second deal, the Lakers traded the draft rights to Toby Bailey to Phoenix in exchange for future considerations.
