March 2000: FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH: A little girl who wonder away from her parents splashes about the Sandton Square fountain. The weather was unsually warm and dry for Johannesburg which had seen virtually non-stop rainy days since Christmas 1999.
March 2000: CYCLE POWER: Each year for one day the city of Cape Town gives way to the power of the cycle when thousands of cyclist participate in the annual Pick'nPay/Cape Argus Cycle tour. This year some 35 000 cyclists cycled a 140km route around the Peninsula. MORE PICS1 PICS2 PICS3 PICS4 PICS5
March 2000: A PRAYER OF SANITY: Finkelstein describes himself as "just a hopeless burgie" but it would appear from his other comment that there's more to him than meets the eye. His remark about our paper, the Cape Times: "You should shoot your editor." Finkelstein spends much of his day walking the streets of downtown Cape Town much to the amusement and disgust of office workers. But people who know him say that he never begs for money or food from anyone.
March 2000: FOR THE CHILDREN: Each Tuesday and Thursday a small group of some of Cape Town and South Africa's best known personalities gather in the Cape Town Council Park on the Foreshore. Their reason - to spend time playing with some of the City's homeless street children. They aim to show the kids that there are people who care to make a difference in their lives. In the ad he wore his robes and stood at the chaple altar. What apparently angered members was the punchline in the PSA - a devil's tail protruding out from underneath his robes. These pics are of the day members of the church showed their support for the Dean, who has been spared the ax. ©AndyO 2000 ... PIC1, PIC2

January 2000: "Granny Attack": When 85 yr old Glynus McGowen was attacked in her home by an intruder she prayed that God would give her the strength she needed to overcome her attacker. And when her attacker produced a hammer with which he intended to kill her she grabbed the hammer from him and beat the living day lights out of him. The attacker got away but Granny McGowen, at least, was safe. Pic: AndyO©
March 1999: "Hennie die haarkapper": Hennie runs a little barber shop in the Free State town of Bloemfontein. When I first moved there in 1996 Hennie refused to cut my hair because he did not do my "type" of hair. On a Cape Times "Reality Check" in 1999 we revisited Hennie to see if his attitude had changed. I was still refused service but at least this time he "posed" for a pic which won him national fame. Pic: AndyO©

September 1999: FUCK YOUR GENDER: The message was clear but, nine years later, homosexuality in South Africa is still shunned. This was a protest in Cape Town's Green Market Square in 1990 when homosexuality was still illegal. In spite of radical shifts in legislation and the adoption of a Bill of Rights which explicitly protect homosexuals, not much has changed in the way of the average person's attitude. AndyO©
September 1999: Hurricanes Floyd and Gert are shown in a satellite image. "Africa's children" originate in central Africa as tropical storms only to be carried by the trade winds to the new world often with devastating effect.
