Heather's Arcadia of my Youth Review

Arcadia of my Youth is the story of a generation of pilots who try to keep their memories alive. It starts out taking place in the past, during World War II. A man flies his plane into the mountains, and for some odd reason, he thinks the mountain is laughing at him. Well, anyway, he only had 10 minutes of fuel left and... well, just watch it for yourself.

Then, in the future, a young man, Harlock, is piloting a spaceship, and a fleet told him that he must land. So he does a really bad job landing the plane, and gets out. They tell him he has until about 11:30, and then he must report in to meet the people who told him to land. So Harlock goes into this bar, and people are beating on this poor guy. Well, he sticks up for the guy. Harlock and the man walk along, and the man tells him his name is Tochiro. Tochiro runs from people alot, and he's used to being picked on. Well, they stay out all night talking and are being spied upon by peoples with guns.

The next morning, he barely makes it to the meeting on time. From here on out, it is a story about how he protects his new friend, his girlfriend, meets new allies, and gets exiled to space. It is sad, confusing, and the plot is kinda screwed up. I really don't know what the show was about. It mostly just talked about the character's ancestors and how they relate to the "EYE" of the plane or something. Well, watch it for yourself and see what you can pick out of it. It was good because Leiji Matsumoto did the story and character design.

Megan's Arcadia of My Youth Review

Arcadia of My Youth was about a plane and it's odd pilot who tended to go on suicide missiona.. that had something to do with 10 minutes of fuel left. Why? The MOUNTAIN WAS LAUGHING AT HIM!! The face floating that symbolized the mountains was very pretty.

The pilot's name was Harlock, and he met Tochiro, an odd scientist. I really liked him, he was such a cutie. Any way, all of Harlock's descendants met with all of Tochiro's descendants and they all were friends. That got really confusing, trying to decipher whether this was NOW, or in the past, a new couple of Tochiro's and Harlocks. (odd, that they would all have the same name, huh?) All hope has been lost except for a woman who does daily broadcasts, which delivered a small bit of hope to the people. I forgot her name, but she ws kinda whiney anyway. (I DID like her, just she was whiney.)

So Harlock is off to relive his past, and save this woman I just mentioned, and to save a friend's family, that planet. But after he discovers what happened to that planet, he must pass through the Fire Hole of the North. (okay, that wasn't the name, I was joking.) As they pass through, the same face appears to them. The fire is attracted to human life-force. The less the force, the less the gravitational attraction. We probably know what happens from here...

4/5 Very good.. but confusing, as I have stated for the thirteenth time today..

Plot Depth

5/5 It was deep, and I got confused a bit following Tochiro and Harlock's past..

Music

5/5 GOOOOD!

Sexual Content

5/5 None, but you know what Harlock thinks about!! (think of Harlock with those big googly eyes and a bloody nose)

Nudity

5/5 None, as far as I can remember. I think there was a semi-cleavage shot as Emeraldas and the lady were strung up as bait).

Violence/Gore

4/5 YES. Quite violent for Leiji Matsumoto's standards. Usually there is not that much, but you see some rather graphic stuff.

Animation

5/5 Exceptional for time it was made.

*A little note about Leiji Matsumoto's work- To fully understand what is going on, you have to see all the other movies. And to understand them, you have to have seen Arcadia of My Youth. It's a never ending chain of having to understand them all. Once you've seen all the other movies, you watch all the other ones again. You wil then understand everything. I think he likes it that way, too...
