Session Events & Activities for Students

-On Wednesday-

Student Orientation Session.

Organizer: Anne Ballenger and Carla Guerrón-Montero (SfAA Student Committee)
Date & Time: Wednesday, March 28, 2001 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Valladolid Room.

For students who attend a professional annual meeting for the first time, these gatherings can be intimidating and confusing. How to choose among sessions, workshops, business meetings, receptions and open forums? How to profit from the annual program and learn more about presenters? How to approach and contact professionals during the meetings? For the first time at the SfAA Annual Meetings, the Student Committee will host a Student Orientation session. This session is designed to answer these and other questions, and to guide students on how to navigate through the meetings in the most successful and productive manner.

Participants:

  • Anne Ballenger (Catholic University of America) Student Committee Chair
  • Carla Guerrón-Montero (University of Oregon) Student Representative Executive Board
  • Dr. John Young (Oregon State University) SfAA Past President

The intent is to stimulate dialogue among students and practitioners about innovative practice strategies and new possibilities for applied anthropology in the real world of work.

Two Career Workshops: Student Career Counseling and Job Interview

Organizer: Guerrón-Montero, Carla. (University of Oregon).
Sponsored by: SfAA Student Committee and Membership Committee.

Where Do I Start? Student Career Counseling

Date & Time:Friday, March 30th 2000, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Business Center (Fiesta Americana Hotel, Mérida-Mexico)

One of the main concerns of undergraduate and graduate students of anthropology is developing the necessary intellectual and practical instruments in their academic programs to find the job they are looking for. The Student Career Counseling workshop was designed to provide practical suggestions on how to acquire those tools early on in students' programs. For the second consecutive year, this event will provide one-on-one counseling to pre-registered students, who will meet and talk with practitioners, scholars and applied anthropologists. These professionals will advise students about options and opportunities within their particular areas of expertise. More than ten applied anthropologists from a variety of fields will counsel students during this event.

*** Pre-registration is required.
*** Sign-Up NOW & tell me which workshop you want or view Event Sign-Up Sheets.
