Family History - Cunningham
Our first Cunningham ancestor in Mississippi was Hugh W. (possibly Whitfield) Cunningham. Hugh was born about 1809 in Tennessee. We are not sure where. He was shown with his family in Jefferson County in the 1840 census. It is believed
that he died from an injury received when he was kicked by his race horse, "Black Diamond"sometime in 1855. He is known to have been an expert wood craftsman. He once made a clock entirely of wood, even the gears! A bed he constructed for his bride, Sarah Ann May, is still being used by descendants today. The bed belongs to his great-great-great grandson, Archie Dalton Geoghegan of Franklin County, MS. Hugh and Sarah have many descendants still living in Franklin County and surrounding areas today.
