4 Vaughan Brothers in the Civil War
Archibald, James and Robert Vaughan enlisted at Gallatin, near Hazelhurst, Copiah County, MS with the Seven Stars Art. Battalion under Captain Calvit Roberts in the spring of 1861. They were among part of the battery which was captured on July 9, 1863 at the Battle of Port Hudson. They were paroled on July 12, 1863 and proceeded home to Copiah County where they reunited with their company and, after recruiting baby brother Henry, who was now 18, folded into Moorman's 24th Cavalty Battalion on Feb. 23, 1864. Now all four of Henry and Elizabeth Vaughan's youngest sons were serving together in the same unit. They also took part in the battle in July, 1864 in Jefferson County at the Crossroads and again at Concord Church in Yazoo County in December of 1864. Three of the brothers, James, Archibald and Henry, were surrendered with the rest of the 24th at Citronelle, AL by Lt. General H. Taylor, CSA to Major General E.R.S. Canby on May 4, 1865. They were paroled and released on May 12, 1865 at Gainesville, AL. The fourth brother Robert was absent without leave from Oct. 16, 1864 and is believed to have been wounded and returned home.
