TRADITIONS

In Abruzzo nature has a tradition . In a region completely devoted to nature, what sort of traditions can it preserve? It is not by chance that every year at Pretoro the miracle of the wolf of San Domenico is revived, while at Cocullo the weIl-known procession of the snake-charmers attracts thousands of people every year. And at Rocca di Mezzo the right track race, the prize being that the winner may marry the most beautiful girl in the village, or in Loreto Àprutino the ox kneeling down before S. Zopito, while in Pollutri we find the recollection of the miracle of S.Nicola's broad beans.Religious tradition is also combined with paganism and memories of stories handed down from the past. This is the case of the Farchie, the great fire commemorations at Fara Filiorum Petri, the joyful and multicoloured flags procession of the Banderesi at Bucchianico, the bonfires of S. Martino's glories at Scanno, or the fleeing Madonna at Sulmona. And every Good Friday, the Stations of the Cross, with the Miserere sung by a male choir accompanied by one hundred violins, re-echoes through the streets of Chieti. Of unforgettable charm and real historical importance is the Perdonanza Celestiana (the Celestian Pardoning) in L'Aquila, the only jubilee celebration outside Rome, with which in the XIII century, Pope Celestino V, the pope of the "Great Refusal" in Dante's Divine Comedy, granted pardon to the poor and the helpless, who had no other means of obtaining indulgence. And in Scanno, the women still continue to wear the same traditional austere costumes captured in the photos of Cartier-Bresson.

HERMITAGES,ABBEYS AND ARGHEOLOGICAL
SITES

(In Abruzzo nature has a history)
Abruzzo is not only a region where nature reigns, but also an area where religion, art and history are deeply immersed in nature.
The mountains, above all the Maiella, conceal hermitages, where many anchorites retired to meditate, the most famous being Pope Celestino V, who, according to tradition, retired to the hermitages of S. Spirito, of S. Bartolomeo di Legio and the Badia Morronese (Morrone Abbey). Numerous ore the rocky churches built on sites of previous pagan temples, such as the hermitage of Sant'Angelo at Palombaro or the hermitage of Grotte Sant'Angelo at Civitella del tronto. Most singular are the churches along the sheep-tracks, places of shelter and spiritual relief for shepherds and travellers. Abruzzo is scattered with beautiful abbeys of variouis.
styles, such as the Romanesque, the Benedictine, and the Cistercian: worthy of mention are S. Giovanni in Venere, S. Clemente a Casauria, S. Liberatore a Maiella or S. Maria di Propezzano. The spirituality pervading the soul of Abruzzo is also expressed in its sanctuaries, object of continuous religious pilgrinages: from S. Gabriele
dell'Addolorata, on the slopes of Gran Sasso, to the Eucharistic Miracle at Lanciano and to the Madonna dei Miracoli at Casalbordino. Even the memories of ancient Abruzzo ore still alive in towns dating back to the Roman times, such as Juvanum, Alba Fucens or Corfinium, and in prehistorical sites such as the necropolis of Campovalano and Alfedena, or in the archaeological finds of Touta Maruca at Rapino and in those near Schiavi d'Abruzzo.Ancient uninhabited villages, such as Rocca Calascio, with the ruins of its medieval castle, have an intense charm and a remarkable beauty. The beach of Pescara&Francavilla (In Abruzzo nature goes to the sea)The coastline of Abruzzo is varied, where the low and sandy shores to the north contrast with the inclined shores to the south. The sette sorelle (seven sisters), seven seaside resorts in the Province of Teramo, from Martinsicuro to Silvi Marina, the Pescara and the
Francavilla al Mare beaches, offer high evel accommodation, plenty of amusements, leisure facilities, night-clubs, and in Pescara itself, even a modem marina. To the south the scenary changes radically: from Ortona to Vasto and as far as S. Salvo, sloping shores surrounded by the rich Mediterranean vegetation appear on the coastline. They too, are weII equipped far a pleasant holiday. The nostalgic fishing past emerges between S.Vito and Fossacesia, where the trabocchi, singular fishing huts built on piles, are still today used by the Iocal fishermen.
