The bridge gets its name for the strait it spans not its color, which happens to be a rust resistant red color. The strait got its name during the California gold rush when it was the gate way to California, the land of the gold. It can also be said that the strait may have received its name from the golden sunsets it views. One interesting feature of the bridge is the archway on the right hand side. That was drawn into the design to save the old Fort Point that located The fort has since become a historic land mark of the city.
