Saint Dominic's is a neo Gothic cathedral off of California Street in San Francisco
near the end of the Cable Car line.
The current cathedral was built after the 1906 Earthquake, however it looks more
modern than that on the outside. This Neo Gothic Cathedral was slated for
destruction after the 1989 earthquake, however the entire community rallied to keep it.
Saint Dominic's has a lot more arches and buttresses (a trademark of the Gothic style) than its fellow Neo Gothic Cathedral, Grace Cathedral, up the street. I would be willing to bet the buttresses were added after 1989 for added structural support. No matter what the source, I think they add a nice touch. The Cathedral is home to a community of Dominican Priests, meaning that it is also a Roman Catholic cathedral. It has a splendid interior but I was not sure if I could take pictures inside, so I did not. Please e-mail any comments to |
