Lee Smith


Lee Smith was born in Grundy, Virginia (Combs Hill 4). She wrote her first novel when she was eight years old (6). She went to college at Hollins, a women's college in Virginia. According to Smith, Hollin's academy "made you feel like you could do anything" (7). And she did. She and a friend were "go-go dancers for an all-girl rock band called the Virginia Woolfs" (7). Her first published novel, THE LAST DAY THE DOGBUSHES BLOOMED (1968) won the Book-of-the-Month Club contest (9). Her other books include FANCY STRUT, BLACK MOUNTAIN BREAKDOWN, CAKEWALK, ORAL HISTORY, FAIR AND TENDER LADIES, ME AND MY BABY VIEW THE ECLIPSE, and THE CHRISTMAS LETTERS. She currently lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and is an instructor at NC State University.
