Whitney Museum of American Art

"In conjunction with the The American Century exhibition, the Whitney Museum and Intel Corporation have developed The American Century Online Exhibition, one of the most extensive sites ever produced for a single art exhibition. Online visitors will have access to copious commentaries, images, and audio and video samples, as well as interactive tools that will enable them to retrieve the substance and enjoy the spectacle of the exhibition. One hundred works from
each installment of the exhibition are presented along with additional materials that dynamically relate both art and artists with the themes, historic events, and social issues of the period. The launch of the website's first phase coincides with the opening of The American Century on April 23, allowing users to explore the exhibition by creating a customized tour. This phase will also introduce specially designed activities for families. The second phase, launching in September 1999, will present art and contextual material from Part II, 1950-2000, in addition to other enhancements. The American Century Online Exhibition and other technological innovations will afford millions of people the opportunity to appreciate the exhibition in ways never before possible.

The Whitney Museum presents Part I of The American Century from April 23 through August 22, 1999. On view are such icons of American art as Thomas Eakins' The Thinker: Portrait of Louis N. Kenton, Alfred Stieglitz's The Steerage, Edward Hopper's Chop Suey, Grant Wood's American Gothic, Georgia O'Keeffe's Summer Days, Jacob Lawrence's War Series: Victory, and Jackson Pollock's Number 27. More than thirty-five monitors dispersed throughout the galleries offer film clips, while a full-scale film program presents more than two hundred of the most important works of American cinema in the Kaufman Astoria Studios Film & Video Gallery."
