Stars On 45

Anyone remember them? - they were huge in Israel in the early 80's. you know - the "ooh ooh ooh" and "let's do it, let's do it" which preceded those rhythmical medleys. They did the Beatles and then ABBA and had some other 50's and 60's medleys. I got to know so many songs from those medleys, and for the most part was disappointed when I heard the originals. Except for the Beatles, of course. I don't really know much about them. I think they were Dutch. I don't even know how they created those medleys. Did they actually sing the songs or somehow edited them into a medley. Sometimes their version resembles the originals so closely that you can't really tell.

We used to play their records in all the parties (they had two that I can recall. one with a pink cover that include the Beatles medley and another with green cover that include the ABBA medley). We used to have lots of parties at that time. Almost every week. It started when the girls in the class turned 12 and had their Bat-Mitzva parties, followed by the boys that turned 13 and had Bar-Mitzvas. But by then I think we turned to other things (the kids from Fame?)

I downloaded some of those medleys a few weeks ago and listen to them again (one of the wonders of the MP3 revolution - it allows me to get songs that I haven't heard for years!) and just like many sweet childhood experiences re-experienced - it's not the same. 18 years later those medleys sound a bit boring. Especially the ABBA one, but even the Beatles medley was hard to finish. Some of the transitions between the songs are brilliant, but for the most part its not as exciting as it was.
