Astrological Significance

The Sun represents the basic energy of being. It symbolises our individual will, and the way in which the other parts of our psyche are integrated together.

When people talk about their "zodiac sign" or "star sign", what they really mean is the sign that the Sun was in when they were born. This is just one factor in their chart, but it is an important one. The reason why everybody knows this is because you can work it out just by knowing your birthday, without any complicated calculations. For example, a person who has the Sun in Taurus will think of himself as a Taurean. The sign position of the Sun shows the way in which the "Sun energy" expresses itself.

Astronomical details

Although the Sun is obviously not a planet, it is treated as such in astrology, largely for historical reason. The Sun is the star around which the rest of the Solar System rotates; it makes up 99% of the entire mass of the Solar System, and is by far the greatest source of energy.
