The crankshaft seals are very important on a 2 stroke engine.  If they leak the engine will run too lean and will be damaged.  Also, leaking seals result in an engine that becomes increasingly hard to start, especially when hot, and eventually won't start at all. Leaking seals also cause an inability to idle properly, if at all.
