U.S. District Judge William Downes ordered the wildlife service to remove
the transplanted wolves and their offspring, a population of about 160
wolves. However, the judge stayed his ruling pending an expected appeal.
These released wolves have been doing well, forming natural packs and
having pups. Judge Downs would have them killed.
The lawsuit was filed by the Farm Bureau out of the ignorant assumption
that wolves are a danger to ranchers. As things are (and should be), any
livestock killed by a wolf is paid for by funds from The Defenders of
Wildlife. Too, any wolf caught killing livestock may be legally shot.
Wolves can actually be an asset to ranchers in that areas populated by
wolves have lower populations of coyotes, animals which kill more
livestock than any wolf.
Wolves are not a threat to human beings.
There has been NO case of a healthy wild wolf attacking a person.
OK: SO WHAT CAN WE DO?
