Want to Read Excerpts of A Perfect World?
A novel should be crafted with the harmony of a piece of music.
It blends and weaves various parts into a faultless seam. A reader should easliy indentify a novel's beginning,
its middle, and its end. A novel is not scripted gumbo -- rather it is a morsel of elegant art.
A novel should flow like quicksilver, its highpoints touching
emotional chords, and thought provoking elements providing catalyst to intellectual examination. It is a prism wherein
the writer displays a world outside of himself. The novel is thus a lost art. But, the masters are a fine
source-point to help a writer avoid the typical fare. I have learned this. I am a disciple.
I am a mystery novelist. My genre idols are Raymond Chandler, Dashiell
Hammett, Ed McBain, John D. MacDonald -- the Masters.
They have a rythymn and style that few today
can match. They wrote with imagery most
modern writers have the inability to recapture. They also wove themes few today have the talent to match with coherence. Of
course, the great Walter Mosley is probabaly the exception. And, I plan on coming
close.
Perry Richards of A Perfect World has commonalilty
with Phillip Marlowe, Sam Spade, Travis McGee and Easy Rowlins. Like them, Perry often finds himself in a web of circumstances
that are spinning out of control. People get hurt sometimes because of naked innocence but unfortunately, more often
than not, shamless apathy. This is the world these flawed, yet heroic men inhabit and in most respects, they reperesent
a needed moral center.
Perry Richards is bright enough to see the advantage of taking
the easy way out -- staying to himself -- not getting involved. Just as true however, he knows that there is something
about his personal underpinning that dictate that it would be the less honorable course.
Like Marlowe, Spade, McGee and Easy Rowlins, at the end of the day
when the confusion settles, Perry Richards will be that armored knight staring down the odds and winning the day.
The same can be said of private mediator Marvin Tanner of
the Marvin Tanner Mysteries. Marvin and Perry are a new type of hero; flawed; filled with integrity; and dignified. In other words, real men in the midst of pretenders.
Follow Perry, Marvin and the people in their world. You will not be
disappointed.
