Fatherhood and Family Health
A 1995 report of father involvement in families, sponsored by the Virginia Department of
Health Policy Group and the Division of Child and Adolescent Health revealed that there
are many negative health and developmental outcomes of father absence in the family. These
include greater risks of teen pregnancy, higher rates of childhood diseases, greater risk
of substance abuse and school dropout. These findings underscore the fact that fathers
are important in the lives and health of their children.

-Their findings suggest that current proposals to provide tax credits and exemptions for single mothers and
to collect more child support from absent fathers will have little effect on the problem of delinquency
among teenage boys.
"Both measures tacitly accept the father's absence from the home and seek to ameliorate its
consequences by increasing the income available to mother and child. However, it requires an
increase in family income of approximately $50,000 to counter the father's absence,"-
87 % of the juvenile offenders in the Virginia juvenile justice system do not live
with both natural parents and 73 % are rearrested within three years of their release.
