George “Moonie” Gibson enjoyed a 14-year major league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Giants in which he played in 1213 games. The right-handed hitting catcher was the Pirates’ catcher in the 1909 World Series against Detroit. His best season was 1914 when he registered a .285 batting average. After his playing career was over, Gibson became a well-respected manager – managing the Pirates (1920-1924, 1932-1934) and the Cubs (1935). He is the last Canadian-born manager in the major leagues. Gibson is also a member of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.
