"Sammy" was a nickname that he picked up playing semi-pro ball.  He played only one year of major league baseball (1935 for the Washington Senators) then managed/played in the minor leagues along the Eastern Shore for several years after that.  He married a Washington-area girl, later divorced her, and returned to Meridian, where he spent the remainder of his life.  He died in 1991 from prostate cancer. [Information provided by Sammy's grandson].
