Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson was a major baseball figure for forty years. As a key member of the Baltimore Orioles of the 1890's, he was a cheerful but tough-as-nails ballplayer in what was probably the roughest era the game has ever known. As a coach for John McGraw, he developed the pitchers on the Giants' 1911-13 pennant winners. As the Dodgers manager for sixteen years, he fashioned two surprising pennant winners and came close to winning two more.

Billy, as he was known as a youth, loved baseball. He would trail after his big brothers when the town team played or practiced. Billy decided he wanted to be a catcher. He had the stocky build for the position, but more important, he yearned to be the field leader, chattering encouragement to the pitcher, moving the fielders around, and keeping everybody on their toes.

When young Robbie was learning to catch, mitts and padding and face masks were unknown. Some catchers clamped a piece of wood in their teeth, but bumps, bruises, and fractures were trademarks of the position. This toughness, coupled with his sweet-natured disposition, made Uncle Robbie into a baseball legend.

Wilbert was the very first player in MLB history to get 10 or more RBI's in a single game (June 10, 1892 BAL-N).
