A STATEMENT ABOUT YOUTH EMPOWERMENT
This is by Anya Brebner, YAC, St. Lawrence District

Empowerment in YRUU is not about advisors giving power to the youth, or about youth taking power away from the advisors. It involves youth finding the power within themselves to take responsibility for their actions. Advisors are usually hesitant about youth handling this sort of power, and although it is much simpler for and advisor to organize youth group affairs, valuble lessons are learned by youth willing to take the time to try to organize these affairs themselves. An important thing to remember is that youth learn from their mistakes. Lessons are learned and skills are acquired wether or not the final outcome of an action is a positive or a negative one. Empowerment teaches youth about communication, organization and social skills that helps them grow in the YRUU community and helps them reach out to their own congregation and to our society.

With that: Welcome to the Ballou-Channing District YRUU Youth Home Page! Bon Appetite!

Some of you may be asking:
What is YRUU?

YRUU stands for Young Religious Unitarian Universalists (YRUU).
In YRUU we have five componets that help us maintain a healthy and happy commuunity. They are:

Worship: Red is for worship, t he heart, compassion, and love we share together. In YRUU we so oftenly forget the "R" in YRUU. Worship is an important part of any UU event, i.e, youth groups, cons, and other district events. Youth worship tends to be interactive and non-traditional. I find that the best thing about worship is the hugs...it makes me feel more in tune and more included into the community!

Communitiy Building: In literature, yellow is the color of memory and remeniscence.  Community is about honoring and respecting one another while working together as a well oiled machine. Community is there to be the support in times when there is no other support out there. Community building is time for us to share our liberal religious and liberal thoughts and get to know some one else in the process.

Social Action/Social Justice: Green is the color for treating the earth and each other with responsibility.  Green is for social action/social justice becuase youth are passionate about working for a peaceful, fair and just world. In our 6th principle it states that as UU's we work together to make peace, fairness, and justice happen. In YRUU we hold Social Action Conferneces and talk about the issues that concern us, and then we act. "We are not here to do good, but we are here to do better" -Bill Phillips youth advisor in South West District. As UU's, YRUUers, and YA's we all start the change.

Learning: In some eastern philosophies, blue represents intellectual growth and mental energy. Almost every aspect of YRUU lends itself as a learning post. YRUU is a great place for disscussions - sparked perhaps by a guest speaker, movies, workshops, another youth or from life expierence itself. Learning is something we all do. As little kids we learn that as UU's we have open ears, open hands, open minds and hands that are ready to serve.

Leadership: Purple, the color of royalty, represents leadership and self-governance. In YRUU we have many oppourtunites for leadership. We have our YACs (Youth/Adult Comitees/Councils), we have our DYSCs (District Youth Steering Commitees/Councils) and we have our continental Youth Council and Steering Commitee. Within our own congregations we have youth leaders, we have small YAC's. That's just leadership for our governance structures. At con's we have leaders that lead touch groups, which are smaller groups that bond and build as small support groups. With out leadership YRUU would not function, and with out leadership we would have no youth empowerment. As I like to say, POWER TO THE PEOPLE!

YRUU is made up of much more than just these componets but they are still important to how we run. For more information about these componets visit the mother of all YRUU, THE YRUU site.

What Can I Do in YRUU in BALLOU-CHANNING?
You can help host a youth con. A youth con is short for youth conference. Youth conferences are where YRUU practices all the componets plus hardcore style UUism. You don't have to just hold a con to be a part of YRUU in BCD. No, you can help out in your youth group, or become the leader, and if your church doesn't have a youth group set up, start one and find advisors and talk with your DRE (That's director of religious education if you were wondering). If you don't want to do that then you can always write an article for The FUUSE BCD YRUU's newsletter. Or you can take a pretty picture, draw a pretty picture or just plain ol' give the editor a back massage at the end of the day...ooooo that's nice...*cough* hehe, okay if you don't want to do that either...then...well..you can just go to a con, hang out, eat food, laugh and be prosperous in nature and learn a lot by sleeping and dreaming of Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom sword fighting in Pirates of the Carabbiean while at Fairhaven's super awesome con....*WHEW* and if you still don't want to do that then baby cakes you are in the wrong religion! hehe.

Okay so you've explained to me what YRUU is and what I can do in YRUU, but what is the importance of YRUU? Gimme one good reason why I should support YRUU?

YRUU is where we, the young unitarian universalists learn about how to be relious beings, learn about how to help out our mother earth, it's were we come together and practice our religion and learn to practice our religion in many different ways. Without YRUU how can our faith grow? YRUU isn't just for those who are aged 14-20. YRUU is about all the young religious UU's. Without middle schoolers we have no high schoolers, without high schoolers we have no young adults, without young adults we have no church congregations, without church congregations we have no religion, without religion we have no faith, without our congregations we have no babies, no little unitarians that grow up and become big unitarians we have a dead faith. YRUU is here to make a community that is a safe environment for us to grow in. That is why we have the componets, that is why we have advisors that mentor to us, and empoer us. That is why you should keep YRUU going, without you, there is no tomorrow for YRUU's whole!

AH, cool, okay now that I get it, can I have a hug?
Sure why not!...hey...I said a hug not a PHUUF!!!! AHHHHHH!!!!!
