There were a total of 26 rulers in the Han
Dynasty which lasted a total of 402 years . This is excluding Wang Mang,
the nephew of the Empress Dowager, who seized the throne and reigned for a short
period and was soon overthrown by a member of the Han imperial family.
His reign marked a break in
the Han Dynasty and divided it into the Earlier Han period and the Later Han
period. The capital in the Later Han period was moved further east from the
original location of Changan to Luoyang.
The rulers of the Later Han
period were generally much weaker than those of the Earlier Han period, thus
resulting in the fall of the Han Dynasty. It is not surprising that the most
prominent rulers of the Han Dynasty both came from the Earlier Han period. They
are the Han Gaozu (the founder of the Han Dynasty) and Han Wudi (a great
reformist), both from the Earlier Han period.
