AMBASSADOR OF TISSUE DONATION
REPORT - PILOT COURSE (
6TH – 8TH APRIL 2001)
GENESIS
It was during 9th – 10th September 2000, the Bangkok Biomaterial Center had been invited by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) to display its activities at a booth during the NRCT Scientific Exhibition at Mall Bangkapi, Bangkok. It was at this exhibition, that a young student from the Thammasat Klong Luang School visited the booth of the Center. This young man’s name was Mr. Voravet Pariwat. He was a grade 9 student and seemed to be an active young man with an inquisitive mind and was very interested to know more details about Tissue Banking. While explaining to him about the details of tissue banking, the Chairman of the Center, Prof. Yongyudh Vajaradul came with the idea that we (Center) can start some kind of tissue banking program or activity involving the school children. It was assigned to the Center’s Advance Training Course Coordinator to develop an idea and formulate a tissue banking project, which can be practically applied for school students. Thus was the birth of the “AMBASSADOR OF TISSUE DONATION & NATION BUILDER”. During the course of time, when the project proposal was being shaped and fine tuned for practical application, it was felt that there was a need to start a pilot course and test the validity of the project as well as draw the plan of action for the training course. Since the beauty of the project lies in the fact that it involves secondary and high school children, the training course can incorporate the boy-scout activities in order to make the running of the course more attractive. This idea was strengthen by the fact that the Course Director, Prof. Vajaradul is also a Senior Executive Member of the National Scout Organization of Thailand and the Asia Pacific Regional Scout Committee as well as the World Scout Movement.
However before the project’s pilot course is commenced, it was felt that an introductory preliminary lecture on tissue banking should be imparted to the school children so as to prepare them as well as generate an enthusiasm in them to join the pilot course. The young student from Thammasat School was our lead and we planned to capitalize the opportunity. Mr. Vorawet was invited to a meeting of the Center and was appraised of the Center’s idea of conducting a tissue banking lecture programme at his school. It was agreed and he was given the assignment of making the appointment with his school principle for further discussions and planning of the date schedule etc. Hence on 21.12.2000, the introductory lecture was delivered by Prof. Vajaradul. There were a total of 65 students from the grade 8 – 10, who attended the lecture. At this juncture, students were also appraised of the Project’s pilot course to be conducted in the 1st quarter of coming year (i.e year 2001) and their parent’s consent to attending the course. In February 2001, the date for the pilot course was finalized as 6th – 8th April. In Bangkok, there is a very famous University called the Thammasat University. It is located just opposite to the Thammasat School. Hence it was arranged to conduct the Pilot Training Course at the Lecture auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University.

SUMMARY
The pilot training course conducted was a very successful program and has laid down the foundation for planing the itinerary of other subsequent courses of the project. It has helped the Center in understanding the deficiencies, problems, follow-up and various other aspects of project training course implementation. The idea of involving the Boy Scout programme worked like the jig saw effect, which mutually shared the benefits from the training course. It also made the transmission of lectures and ideas of the training course in a more conducive and student friendly environment. The participant students had been very happy and demonstrated positive attitude towards the training course ideals. This pilot course has paved the road the commencing of the planned training courses of the “Ambassador of Tissue Donation” project.
