The meet started out with Steve Mance running what was probably the best 3200m time by a sophmore (9:56) since Kevin Kelly's 9:36.5 in 1977, which remains the school record to this day. The large lead had fallen through in the next two legs and Kimball had the lead by about 30m over Foley, another 20m back was the Dondero team. Terry Monette got within a meter of the Kimball anchor however after using much energy in catching up, he was beat in the last 500m of the race. The 11:25 he ran still was his season best, setting him on pace to beat his 10:53 PR he set at last year's regional meet.

This race started off with an exciting first leg between Kimball's Dan Evans and Foley's Steve Mance. Evans was out to an early lead but Mance passed him after 700m. He hung on, with Evans drafting closely for nearly two laps, until Mance broke free with a fast kick, winning by 2 seconds. The fresh Kimball team soon took the lead over the tired Foley runners, all of whom had just completed the 4x3200m relay. Dondero had also passed, moving Foley into third. Kimball finished with an excellent time of 20:26, an average of just under 5:07 per runner.

Medley relay's are always exciting and this one was no exception. Kimball and Dondero were out to a lead all alone with Shrine in third. This looked like this was how it was going to be, especially with Foley missing a good 200m runner, Andrew Kassab, and our top 400m runner, Steve Zimmerman, who had just ran a 56.1 on the slow Foley track. But we were able to come charging back, with Chris Harper steadily gaining on Shrine in the anchor. Harper barely got the lead in the last 50m, however the Shrine runner moved back into first. Harper dived for the win, and in a close call Shrine was given 3rd place, and Foley 4th, although many claimed Harper's torso crossed first.

We've struggled some this year in the 4x800m relay, and the fact that our last 3 legs had already run the 4x3200m and 4x1600m didn't help. Our other runner, Mike Naimy, is just coming off a minor injury and has hardly run in the past 10 days. Our team was struggling with fatigue, however a bit of luck helped Foley overtake Dondero in the 2nd leg, when the Dondero runner had to stop, walk, and "lose his lunch" or so to speak. Foley increased the lead over the last 2 legs although we could not catch Shrine.

This was an interesting event for the Foley, as we only have 1 true hurdler (Freshman Shane Johnson). Kimball and Dondero had both produced fast times in the first heat and the match was set between Foley and Shrine. We quickly took an early lead and never looked back. Special accolades go to Benny Duane, who had never jumped a hurdle in his life before Friday's practice. He still did fairly well in the shuttle hurdle relay, although he did get a battle wound to prove his true grit. :)
