- Sarah Bitter found an interesting site at SHELBY CEMETERY BURIALS Charlestown Township, Clark County, Indiana
this site listed graves of the Shelby family
* Please note this site was unavailable 1/1/2008 therefore the link has been
deleted. I am continuing to list the material found for anyone
interested in this information.
Isaac Shelby, Governor of Kentucky (son of Letitia Cox), and his wife Susannah Hart were the parents of:
John Shelby and his wife Elizabeth Pile, who were the parents of
Evan Shelby, County Judge in Clark Co, and his wife Margaret
Blue, who were the parents of
Uriah Blue Shelby and wife Mary A Hammond, who were the parents of
1. Evan Shelby (1843-1886), buried at Shelby Cemetery, married:
1st wife - Donnie Ramsey (1848-1873), mother of:
1.Mattie T (b. 1868)
2.Thomas W. (18 May 1870-7 Dec 1870)
3.Donnie D. (7 Feb 1873- 7 Jul 1873)
2nd wife - Lizzie Ramsey (1857-1879), sister of Donnie Ramsey, mother of:
1.Julia H., b 1876, Clark Co, IN
2.James V., b 1878, Clark Co, IN
Isaac SHELBY, County Clerk in Clark Co, brother of Evan Shelby (the elder), son of John Shelby and
Elizabeth Pile, married Nancy Blue. Isaac left for Missouri by 1845.
Evan SHELBY (husband of Margaret BLUE) was the County Clerk between 1811-1813 & later, County Judge in Clark Co and I surmise the Shelby Cemetery was his property.
Evan's brother Isaac SHELBY (wife Nancy BLUE) also served (after his brother) as the County Clerk- but by 1845 Isaac and family had moved to Lafayette Co, MO. They lived near Dover on a farm they called
"Locust Grove" on the road between Lexington & Georgetown.
The RAMSEYs are in the 1880 census for Charlestown, Clark Co, IN
Evan SHELBY was a widow again in 1880. In his household were his 2 living children, Julia H. (b 1876) and James V. (b 1878); his Mother-in-law, Mary E RAMSEY (b 1826 IN); Sister-in-law, India RAMSEY (b 1857 IN) and brother-in-law, Harry RAMSEY (b 1864 IN).
Uriah Blue SHELBY was born abt 1811 in Charlestown, Clark Co, IN and married Mary Ann
HAMMOND on 12 Apr 1838, in Clark Co, IN. They lived in Memphis, TN
Evan SHELBY and Margaret BLUE also had a son, William Blue SHELBY, b 1804 in Clark Co., who
married Mary E WILSON- They had a daughter Ida Mary SHELBY b 23 Dec 1853, who married Preston M WEST.
Ida, or Mary as she was usually called, had a daughter who married A. C. COOMBS of Jeffersonville, Clark Co, IN. Ida Mary, died at the age of 76, in Aug 1930, at the home of her daughter Mary COOMBS.
