UNCONNECTED FAMILY -- P

P1

P. William BLUE (1793-1870), m.1818 Margaret A. IDLE (1797-1885). They were born in VA and married in Champaign

Co. OH. She was a daughter of Martin and Mary (BROOKS) IDLE. Margaret migrated to OH from VA in 1815 with her

brothers, Henry, John and Jacob IDLE. William owned 80 acres of land in Section 32 of Mad River Twp. which he

purchased from John and Mary BLUE (possibly his brother) in 1820. He sold this land to Martin Idle in 1843 and

purchased from Martin Idle the east 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of Section 28, Twp. 4, Range XII (Concord Twp.). He appears on

the tax rolls of Champaign Co. in 1820, and remains on the rolls at least through 1827. William was a veteran of the War

of 1812, serving in Capt. Abner Barrett's company from 21 Aug to 21 Oct 1812 and from 1 Jan to 21 Feb 1813. His

military papers state that he was 5'-10" tall, with blue eyes and light complexion. William and Margaret died in

Champaign Co. and are buried at Harbour-North Cemetery. His will was proved on 24 Sep 1870 and mentions an unnamed

wife, sons Martin, Simon, William W. and James R., and heirs of John and Samuel who are each to receive $10. Margaret

was living with son Martin in Concord Twp. in 1880.

Champaign Co. OH. They lived in Black Creek Twp., Mercer Co. OH in 1850 and in Miami Twp., Logan Co. OH in 1860.

The 1860 census record for this family is most unusual:

Logan County, Miami Twp.

BLUE 40 F OH

Louisa 20 F OH

Ezra 18 M OH

Gabriel 16 M OH

BLUE 14 F OH

William 11 M OH

BLUE 8 F OH

BLUE 2 M OH

The missing names are not explained. It is strange that the named children are only those who were named in the 1850

census, Mercer Co. OH. On 19 Aug 1862, John enlisted in Co. E, 45th OH Infantry Regiment. He died on 3 Feb 1863 at

death, in 1863, Samuel purchased 40 acres on the south side of the NW 1/4 of Sect. 22, Twp. 4, Range XII (Concord

Twp.). In 1884, Isabel divided this land between her two children. Samuel died in Champaign Co. and Isabel died in

Logan Co. OH. They are buried at Salem Cemetery, southwest of Springhills, Harrison Twp., Champaign Co. OH. It is

interesting to note that, in 1850, Samuel was living with the family of Nancy BLUE, widow of Andrew [1.3.1.7.2], and

helping out on their farm. This implies a close relationship between the two families. Isabel was living with her son,

UNCONNECTED FAMILY -- Q

Q1

Q. John BLUE (1792-1871), m.1819 Mary HOBOUCH (1797-1878). The birthplaces of John and Mary are uncertain, for

records conflict. The 1860 census of Champaign Co. OH indicates that they both were born in VA. However, their death

records, recorded at the county seat of Champaign Co., indicate that he was born in MD and she in PA. Furthermore, the

1870 census indicates he was born in VA and she in KY. They were married in Logan Co. OH, close to the time they

arrived in Champaign Co. John was a farmer, according to the census records. In 1819, he received a land grant for the

NE 1/4 of Sect. 32, Twp. 4, Range XI. This land was located in the southwest part of Mad River Twp. Shortly after he

received this land, John and Mary sold the western half to William BLUE [P.], leading to the theory that John and

William were brothers. In 1830, John and Mary sold the remaining (eastern) half to Samuel and Richard BLUE [1.3.1.7]

and [1.3.1.7.6], which probably implies some relationship between them.

In 1834, John purchased land from Chris Sipe in Jackson Twp., the NW 1/4 of Sect. 1, Twp. 3, Range XI, about two

miles southwest of his original grant. In 1850, he and Mary sold 35 acres of this land to their eldest son, Peter. Upon

John's death, the remainder of this land was divided between his two sons, Peter and Newton BLUE. John's will was dated

15 Mar 1871 and proved 27 Nov 1871, however, Champaign Co. death records indicate that he died in 1870. This error

tends to discredit the MD birthplace given in the same record. John and Mary are buried at the Mt. Zion Baptist Cemetery,

south of St. Paris OH. His stone indicates he died 27 Nov 1871, confirming the error in the county death records.

Q.1* Peter BLUE (1822-1902), m.1848 Rebecca Ellen BRIDGEMAN (1828-1903).

Q.2* Newton BLUE (ca1825-1895), m.1848 Deidamia FUSON (ca1828-1893).

Q.4* Isabella BLUE (b.ca1840), m.1869 Jacob WALKER (b.ca1832).

Q.5 Susannah BLUE (ca1843-1886), m1.1869 David SNAPP, m2. J. PENCE. Her gravestone in Mt. Zion Cemetery

indicates that she is a daughter of J. & M. BLUE and that she was b.1829 (i.e., died 3 May 1886, age 56yr 10mo 25da),

while the 1860 census indicates that she was b.ca1843.

Q.6 Jane BLUE (b.ca1844), m.1875 Barton WONES.

Q2

Q.1 Peter BLUE (1822-1902), m.1848 Rebecca Ellen BRIDGEMAN (1828-1903). They both were born in OH and were

married in Champaign Co. OH. In 1850, Peter purchased from his parents 35 acres of land in the NW 1/4 of Sect. 1, Twp.

3, Range XI (Jackson Twp.). Upon his father's death, he received an additional 65.5 acres in the same quarter section,

containing the home residence. In 1881, Peter and Rebecca sold to his brother, Newton, a half acre strip on the north side

of the quarter section. In 1881, they sold two acres in the quarter section to Sarah A. BLUE, who may be a daughter of his

brother Newton or the wife of his son Winfield. Sarah sold the two acres to Ralph FOSTER in 1883 and he sold it back

to Rebecca E. BLUE in 1890. Peter and Rebecca are buried at Mt. Zion Baptist Cemetery, south of St. Paris OH.

Q.1.1* Winfield S. BLUE (1850-1885), m1.1872 Elizabeth FAULKNER (ca1855-1879), m2.ca1880 Sarah A. CRIFFIELD

References: A294, A312, A453, A511, A733, B300, B301, B302, B303, B890, B891.

Q.2 Newton BLUE (ca1825-1895), m.1848 Deidamia FUSON (ca1828-1893). They were both born in OH and were married

in Champaign Co. OH. Newton received 50.5 of land in the NW 1/4 of Sect. 1, Twp. 3, Range XI upon his father's death.

In 1879, after his mother's death, he sold this land to J. L. Edmonston and apparently moved out of the county. However,

Newton and Deidamia are buried at Mt. Zion Baptist Cemetery, south of St. Paris in Jackson Twp., Champaign Co. OH.

Their stones indicate that he was b.1821 and she was b.1822, which represents a considerable conflict with census

records, including the order of birth of Peter and Newton. At this time we choose to accept the census records, not

knowing the age and condition of the gravestones. Deidamia was a daughter of Elder William and Deidamia FUSON. He

was the founder of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Q.2.1 Commodore Perry BLUE (1849-1851). Buried at Mt. Zion Baptist Cemetery.

(now Germany). They were married in Champaign Co. OH. Jacob was a shoemaker and they were living in Johnson

Twp., Champaign Co., in 1870. He appears at that time to have been quite successful at his trade; he owned $6000 worth

of real property and $1000 worth of personal property.

Q.4.1 Martin WALKER (b.ca1861).

Q.4.2 William WALKER (b.ca1863).

Q.4.3 John WALKER (b.ca1866).

References: A294, B301.

(Note: The difference between the date of their marriage and the date of birth of the first child suggests that Isabella might be

his second wife. However, in the 1870 census, she is listed as Belle, age 45, another discrepancy. The 1880 census

might clear up this problem.)

UNCONNECTED FAMILY -- R

R1

R. Lemuel BLUE (ca1800-1835), m.1821 Susannah JOHNSTON (b.1800/10). They were married in Champaign Co. OH.

The first known record of Lemuel is dated 9 Aug 1820, when he witnessed the sale of 80 acres in Sect. 32 of Mad River

Twp., Champaign Co. OH, by John and Mary BLUE [Q.] to William BLUE [P.]. Then on 7 Sep 1820, Lemuel bought 30

acres of land in the NW quarter of Sect. 33 of the same township. Witnesses to this deed were John and William BLUE.

There may have been some controversy over the title to this 30 acres, for quit claim deeds were written in 1823 and 1827,

and Lemuel didn't start paying taxes on it until 1824. There is no record of the sale of this land or its disposition after

Lemuel's death filed in Champaign Co. In 1830 Lemuel was living in Clark Co. OH.

On 8 Dec 1831, Lemuel purchased 105 acres in Wayne Twp. of Champaign Co. from Joseph Huffman. This land,

known as Lot # 2, was in the Military Survey and was part of a 1000 acre tract designated by #6238. It is located about

two miles east of Cable (formerly Cabletown) on the old railroad line. This land became the home of Lemuel and his

family for the next 60 years. After Lemuel's death, many deeds and mortgages were filed by his descendants. Initially, his

heirs each had an undivided 1/5 of Lemuel's combined estate. Then in 1885, grandson Lewis’s widow, and administratrix

of his estate, wrote a deed for an undivided 1/7 of Elbert’s estate to Vermena. Still later, in 1891, Elbert's widow,

Vermena, wrote a deed to her son, Henry, for an undivided 1/4 of the estate. That same year, Henry sold or mortgaged 4/7

share of the estate. A detailed study of these documents is needed to understand this mathematical progression.

In 1840, the census shows Susannah as head of the household, living with two sons, three daughters, and an older

woman, possibly her mother. She m2.1847 Otho JOHNSON in Champaign Co. She died in Schuyler Co. IL.

R.1 Eli BLUE (b.ca1822), m.1849 (no return) Martha Jane SHOWERS.

R.2 Elias BLUE (b.ca1824), m.1847 Mary (MITCHELL) HESS (b.ca1815). Mary had two children from her first marriage

to Elisha HESS, H. Harrison HESS/BLUE (b.ca1840) and Nancy E. HESS/BLUE (b.ca1843). They lived in Jasper Co.

IN in 1860.

UNCONNECTED FAMILY -- S

S1

S. Charles James BLUE (1804-1863), m. Mary C. VANCE (1811-1870). Family tradition says that Charles was born in SC,

however, both the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Hampshire Co. VA say that Charles and Mary were both born in VA. It is

also said that he came to Hampshire Co. when he was about 18 years of age (ca1823), however, he first appears in the VA

census (in Hampshire Co.) in 1840. A review of the 1830 Hampshire Co. census data show no unaccounted-for males, in

BLUE families, of the age 16/26. So, the 1823 arrival date has not been confirmed by this compiler. C61 indicates that

Charles’ son, J. H. BLUE, was of English ancestry, while the other BLUE families of the county were of Dutch ancestry.

Charles was a farmer, and in 1843 he served as a justice in Hampshire Co. and was a member of the Virginia Legislature at

the outbreak of the Civil War. He, or his son Charles, was appointed to the Hampshire Co. committee of safety in 1861.

Charles and Mary were buried at Indian Mound Cemetery in Romney WV. Their birth and death dates were taken from their

stones.

Descendants of John BLAW (BLUE), d.1757 Somerset Co., NJ, 4th Edition, 1990, lists the Ezekiel

BLUE who married Sarah REED as [1.5.8.1]. However, data submitted by Pamela McLaughlin

(researching for Robert T. H. Davidson) of Killingworth CT indicates that this is incorrect. Sarah

REED married a younger Ezekiel BLUE who was a blacksmith, and who lived in Jefferson Co. VA in

1820. The ancestry of this Ezekiel in not yet known.

Z1

Z. Ezekiel BLUE (ca1778-1832), m.1798 Sarah REED (ca1776-1866). She was born in VA. They were married in Berkeley

Co. VA. Ezekiel was a blacksmith and was taxed in Jefferson Co. VA (Berkeley Co. prior to 1801) through 1806. On 27

Jan 1814, Ezekiel filed for divorce from Sarah REED in Scioto Co. OH on the grounds of adultery. On 26 Oct 1814 both

partied requested a continuance to the next session. On 7 Nov 1815 Ezekiel appeared in court and discontinued his suit,

and the judge ordered that he pay Sarah's costs. Ezekiel was a Supreme Court juror for Scioto Co. in 1814 and 1816. At

this point, Ezekiel and his family may have moved back to Jefferson Co. VA, for an Ezekiel BLUE reappears on the tax

rolls 1817-1820. Ezekiel is listed as a blacksmith in the Jefferson Co. VA census of 1820 (although there appears to be

an error in his age). In this census he was listed on the same page as Saulter BLUE (John Salter BLUE [1.5.5.1]), who was

also a blacksmith. This suggests that they were partners, and were closely related. Between 1820 and 1830, the family

left VA and returned to OH. In 1830 they were living in Scioto Co. OH. Shortly they moved to Cincinnati, Hamilton Co.

OH, where Ezekiel died of a "bilious fever" during a cholera epidemic. Sarah died at Cincinnati and is buried there at

Spring Grove Cemetery. NOTE: The Ezekiel BLUE, blacksmith, in the 1820 census of Jefferson Co. VA may be

[1.5.5.4.1]. If this is the case, Ezekiel and Sarah probably stayed in OH and were missed in the 1820 census.

AF. David S. BLUE (ca1820-bef1893), m. Anna Maria BARTHOLOMEW (b.1833). He was born in NJ and she at

Northford, New Haven Co. CT. She was a daughter of Rockwell and Mary (ATWELL) BARTHOLOMEW. They were

living in Warren Twp., Somerset Co. NJ in 1860, where David was a landlord in a hotel. On the same page in that census

is Albert L. BLUE (age 25) [1.5.7.4.1.2], also a landlord in a hotel. This may imply a close relationship between David

and Albert. David may be an older brother to Albert and an early son of Enos L. BLUE [1.5.7.4.1]. In the 1830 census

of Middlesex Co. NJ, there is an unidentified male age 10-15 in the family of Enos. Also, in the 1840 census there is an

unidentified male age 20-30 in the family of Enos. These entries may be for David S. BLUE. The compiler has not been

able to locate David in the 1850 census, however, he has not seen the CT census, the home state of his wife Anna Maria.

By 1870 David and his family had moved to Washington DC, where he was a clerk in the War Dept. In 1880 David was

still living in Washington DC and worked as a bookkeeper in a bank. The 1889 Washington city directory lists David S.

BLUE living at 705 K, NW. In the 1893 directory David is gone and Anna is still living at 705 K, NW. In 1900 Anna

was living as head of a household containing her son Charles and his family.
