WHAT: The *Vela Chess Club will host the 1999 New Year’s Bash Scholastic Chess Tournament on

January 9, 1999. A 6-Round Swiss (No Elimination) in 4 sections. Primary: K-3rd, Elementary: K-6th,

Middle School: 6th-8th, and High School: 9th- 12th.

Time Controls: Game/30 (Thirty minutes per side per game.)

Pair Plus computer generated pairings.

Equipment: If possible, bring your own clock, board, and chess pieces.

WHO: Scholastic – any student grades K-12th. (USCF membership required for all sections.)

WHEN: Early registration must be received by Thursday, January 7, 1999 – Absolutely No Exceptions! Early

Registration helps us run a better tournament. Limited Seating – Please Register Early!

Late Registration will begin at 8:00 A.M. and close at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday January 9, 1999.

Round 1 begins promptly at 10:30 A.M. The next rounds will be paired as soon as the previous

rounds end. The tournament ends at approximately 6:00 P.M. with an awards presentation to follow.

WHY: To keep your chess skills sharp. In mid-February, Pace High School will host the Regional

Chess Tournament and in early March, Corpus Christi will be hosting the State Competition.

ATTENTION: Add $10 to fee if registering late at tournament site – No Exceptions! On site registration may

require a ½ bye for first round. Even if you pre-register, please arrive early at the tournament

site and make sure your name is listed in the proper section.

PRIZES: Trophies to the top 15 players in each section and trophies to the top 5 teams in each section. Also class and unrated trophies will be awarded in each section.

COST: $10 (if current USCF member) * You must be able to prove your USCF membership –

NO EXCEPTIONS! Bring your USCF card, receipt, or USCF magazine.

If you cannot prove your current membership, you must pay an additional $12 if (K-8th) or

$17 (high school) at the tournament site.

FOOD: A food concession will be provided by the Vela Chess Club Parent Support Group.
