Covenanting Families

Gemmels of Over Garrive, Knockburnie, Cairn of Buckwhanny

Probably related to George Gemmel of Maneight and Patrick Gemmel of the Castle both of who appeared in the 'proclamation for apprehension' issued by Charles II in 1685.

Crichton of Craigman

Appeared in the 'proclamation for apprehension' issued by Charles II in 1685.

Mitchell of Nether Garrive / Over Polqhuise

George Sanderson suggests that the Covenanter Robert Mitchell is a member of this family. He was martyred in 1685 at Ingliston near Moniave and buried at Glencairn Kirkyard. Although he is referred to as Robert Mitchell of Cumnock it is important to recognise that at that time the names Old Cumnock and New Cumnock were not in regular use. For instance the main community in New Cumnock was still called Cumnock castle. Indeed the Earl of Dumfries was still trying to reverse the decision (in 1650) to sub-divide the parish of Cumnock into the two new parishes of Old Cumnock and New Cumnock, a challenge he finally gave up in 1691. Therefore any references to the name Cumnock in the period 1650-1691 should be scrutinised to check if the locale in question refers to either the Old or New Cumnock of today.

Place-Names

Most of the names given in 1706 are still well known in the parish other than perhaps Stanefauld. Garrive clearly formed a sizeable community with reference to Nether, Over and Burnside included. The Cairn of Buckwhanny has no longer any farm or cottage associated it with, but the site of this ancient cairn still appears on modern maps on the lands of Ashmark farm - the name later transforms to Cairn of Buchanny.
