Hair / Hare Family

James Hare in Wellhill, Janet Hair in Polquhirter and Helen Hair in Straid may be related to the Hair family of Glenwharry in Kirkconnel. Their lands were forfeited following the martyrdom of John Hair at Overcairn , New Cumnock in 1685.

 

Mitchell Family

James Mitchell in Rig, Andrew Mitchell in Knockburnie, ? Mitchell in Garrive and John Mitchell may be related to Robert Mitchell of Cumnock, martyred at Ingliston near Moniave in 1685.

 

Gemmell Family

William Gemmel in Boig and Agnes Gemmell in Lowes may be related to George Gemmell in Maneight and Patrick Gemmell in the Castle both of who appeared in Charles II proclamation for apprehension in 1685.

 

Hutchison Family

Sarah Hutchison in Rig and Janet Hutchison in Hoodsknow (Janet's illegitimate daughter Sarah probably named after her relative in Rig) may be related to Hugh Hutchison and Thomas Hutchison in Dalgig , both escaped capture by government troops in 1685.

 

Crichton Family

Joan Crichton in Beoch and Jean Crichton in Polquhirter may be related to Crichton of Craigman who appreared in Charles II proclamation for apprehension in 1685.

 

Crawford Family

Andrew Crawford and his son Hugh in the Liggat may be related to Hugh Crawford first minister of New Cumnock and one of Ayrshire's 'true band of Covenanters'.

 

 

Place-names

Most of the place-names are still well known in the parish with the exception perhaps of Coldstream and Hoodsknow.
