Hair / Hare Family

John Hair in Brockloch may be related to the Hair family of Glenwharry in Kirkconnel. Their lands were forfeited following the martyrdom of John Hair at Overcairn , New Cumnock in 1685.

Mitchell Family

Daniel Mitchell in Waterhead and Margaret Mitchell in Bank may be related to Robert Mitchell of Cumnock, martyred at Ingliston near Moniave in 1685.

Gemmell Family

William Gemmel in Garrieve, Agnes Gemmell in Lowes and Janet Gemmell in Corsencon may be related to George Gemmell in Maneight and Patrick Gemmell in the Castle both of who appeared in Charles II proclamation for apprehension in 1685.

Hutchison Family

Elizabeth Hutchison in Auchencross, Margaret Hutchison in Coldstream (her daughter Sarah is probably named after Sarah Hutchison in Rig see 1709 Records) and Hugh Hutchison in Hoodsknow may be related to Hugh Hutchison and Thomas Hutchison in Dalgig , both escaped capture by government troops in 1685.

Indeed Hugh Hutchison in Hoodsknow may in fact be Hugh Hutchison of Dalgig, for the Reverend Robert Simpson records that Hugh Hutchison lived for many years after his escape in 1685, and was later at Farthing Reoch (Fardenreoch). But where was Hoodsknow?

Crichton Family

Margaret Crichton in Park may be related to Crichton of Craigman who appreared in Charles II proclamation for apprehension in 1685.

Crawford Family

Mary Crawford in Polquhirter, wife of Hugh Dunbar may be related to Hugh Crawford first minister of New Cumnock and one of Ayrshire's 'true band of Covenanters'.

Campbell Family

Patrick Campbell of Polquhirter and Mary Campbell in Castle Mains may be related to the Campbell families of Dalhanna, Lochbrowan and Lochingarroch all of who appear in the Rev. Simpson's 'Traditions of the Covenanters'

Place-names

Most of the place-names are still well known in the parish with the exception perhaps of Coldstream and Hoodsknow.
