Keeping Your Stones

Different people will have different reactions when they pick up a stone. Some will feel its vibrations strongly emulating into their hand. They may find an instant relationship and wish to keep the stone with them, while another may throw the stone down and complain of an uncomfortable sensation. Different stones produce different natural energies. They are dolmens, used by Mother Nature to focus energy in specific centers on the earth.

When you find a stone that you wish to use or if you buy a stone from a shop (both are acceptable ways of acquiring your stones), you will need to cleanse the rock in preparation for magic or as a channel for your energies. (We will discuss cleansing in the next section)

Once your stones are cleansed and you have begun working with them, you will want to keep them in a place where others can not haphazardly or unknowingly handle your rocks or crystals. To do so would introduce new energies to the stone and to the magic that you are working. Some people (and some animals) can unknowingly drain or re-energize your stones with their energy. It is a good idea to keep your crystals and rocks in place that is out of reach - maybe on your alter, or in a special basket or box. If you would like to share crystals with your company, you can have a special place for those rocks. I keep a small glass bowl in my guest bathroom with Quartz crystals for those guests who wish to handle them or have one for themselves.

Cleansing Your Stones

Cleansing your stones and crystals is a very important part of Earth Magic. When you get a new addition to your stone family, it may have been handled by people or left in a deep lake for a long time without any contact to humans or animals. These stones will have an energy that has developed from one source or another. You must cleanse the stone of all unnecessary energies before you can begin focusing your magic with the rock.

I will use a quartz crystal in my example here, but you would follow this basic rite with any stone. Feel free to change areas of the rite that fit your situation better - always remember that your magic begins inside of yourself. The first thing to do is collect what is needed: a candle, a container of sea water, specific herbs or flowers, a lighter, the stone or crystal to be cleansed.

If you have a specific use in mind for you stone, you will want to assemble the corresponding colored candle (see Candle Magic) and herbs or flowers (see The Herbalist). I then erect a circle of protection and ignite cleansing incense on my alter (a mixture of Frankincense and Myrrh and Dragon's Blood with a touch of Mistletoe). I then visualize a powerful energy field surrounding the area as I light the candle. I will use a white candle for the quartz crystal as I wish this stone to be used as a spiritual protector when I am meditating.

I will place the crystal into the container of sea salt, offering the impure or random energies to the Water Elementals. I will then take the stone and hold it in my hand near my chest and visualize my energies surrounding the crystal. I will offer it up to the Air Elementals. for their blessings. Then I will pass the rock through the flame of the candle while concentrating on the rocks unique energy potential. All the while I am visualizing the cleansing of the stone. I offer the crystal to the Fire Elementals to burn out any remaining impurities.

Hold the rock in you hands and concentrate. Feel the vibrations run through your hands and into your body. Place the crystal into the seawater again and close your ritual. The rock is cleansed and ready for you to energize with your magic.
