 Q. What kind of plants do we want to grow in our garden?

A. Vegetables, flowers, herbs, and fruit. Where there is a severe slope, we plan on planting shrubs and trees.

Q. What is the soil like?

A. Will need much soil to be brought in. The soil on the site is hard-packed, and full of debris. Even weeds don’t like to grow there.

*The soil neither drains quickly, nor does the water puddle, but runs off the hard, sloped surface and forms gullies.

*Soil pH not known- please test.

Q. Where will we get water for the Garden?

A. From the fire hydrant located at 3500 Indian Queen Lane

Q. Is the garden site sunny or shady?

A. Full sun, at least 8 hours of each day

Q. Do we want more trees?

A. Yes, particularly on the steepest slopes where vegetable gardening will be very difficult. We are considering partnering with the Wissahickon Restoration Volunteers in their "Seed to Tree" program. They are looking for sites to plant native tree saplings for eventual replanting in the Wissahickon for reforestation projects.

Q. Is there anything on the site that needs to be moved?

A.There are some weeds, lots of trash, stones, and broken masonry.

Q. What kind of support do we have for the Garden?

A. We have gotten support from the neighbors adjacent to the lot, and from Community Council.

Q. What additional features are desired in garden?

A. Benches, sitting area, composting bins.

Q. What is the layout of the site?

A. Entire surface is sloped, and we would like to reduce the slope with terracing.

Q. How many people can be relied upon for upkeep?

A. Thirteen. See telephone tree.

Q. What is the primary concern for this site?

A. Our goals are to create a green oasis in a neighborhood that is densely populated, with very few trees, to turn a neighborhood eyesore into a asset, and to provide the participants with the opportunity to grow plants and vegetables we wouldn’t otherwise be able to cultivate for lack of space.
