__ -----___ THE ANSWER TO THE FRESHMAN YEAR QUESTION IS SO LONG IT HAS ITS OWN PAGE _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ ______ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ ANSWER TO "BREAKING AWAY" QUESTION: The movie was an anachronism that was made a decade too late. By the time it came out in 1978 it was no big deal for working class kids to go to college as the college loans had been easily available since 1972. I grew up in a working-class family. It was a very weird thing for someone like me to make it to college in the pre-loan year of 1967. But in 1968 the college loans strted to trickle out and a FEW got them and it remained like that until 1972 when the dam seemed to burst and they were all over the place. If the son of a quarry worker had gone to college in 1968 it would really have been something, but it was nothing in 1978. Remember that the guy who did the movie went to college around William Buckley's time in the early 1950s(?). he SHOULD have made it a historical drama.
