NAF
Washington
My next duty assignment was to Naval Air Facility Washington,
onboard Andrews Air Force Base, in Maryland. This was my first encounter with
"TAR's." I never knew they even existed. After I did some work in the
Pentagon, I actually received an "award" (it wasn't worth any points)
accusing me of being a TAR. It never made it to my service record!
Once again I had the "honor" of making the most of a
day off by participating in an event involving the President of the United
States of America. (I was off on the day "volunteers" were selected.)
I got to march behind the horses (and their resulting "piles") as a
participant during the Inaugural Parade of President Clinton. The announcer
called me a "Reserve." So much for accuracy in the media! I did
receive an awesome looking certificate though.
While at NAF Washington, I experienced
"regionalization" firsthand and became part of Naval District
Washington. That meant I was no longer assigned to NAF Washington. My records
were still maintained there, I still stood duty there, and I still worked there.
So what changed? When NAF Washington sent all their personnel home due to severe
weather conditions, I got to stay there at work because I didn't work for them,
I worked for Naval District Washington.
While assigned to NAF Washington, I also had the opportunity
to do a little surveying work with CBU-422.
